#FeedbackFriday - 29/05/15

Recommended Posts

Honestly can't believe its the end of the week already!

Before we get to the #FeedbackFriday I just want to make you all aware of two issues with the Pikes Peak Update which we are working on and hope to have a patch live next week for.

The first problem is with the achievements not popping, this is because of some weirdness with our database, it's not your fault.

The second is an invisible wall on Pikes Peak – this isn’t strictly speaking an invisible wall... It’s an invisible burger van that sometimes rolls on to the track. We’re not joking, an invisible tow truck has been called and it should be moved soon.

Right, now on to the good bit.

  • This week we want your feedback on our latest update
  • Was the new content easy to find in game?
  • How do you feel about what we've added?
  • What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
  • Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
  • Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?

Thanks for the post opened and the ongoing work behind. So to be constructive:

- This week we want your feedback on our latest update
To be honest, content is much below the v0.3. Pikes Peak cars' handling very unfriendly (on/off physics especially on tarmac relative to accel, braking, in curve) and not realistic IMHO. Starting from the Group B physics would have more appropriated.
The hillclimb is nice (bump, climb itself, transition tarmac/gravel, loss of HP with the climb) but texture quality below the v0.3 tracks.

  • - Was the new content easy to find in game?
    Yes, menu is very userfriendly

  • - How do you feel about what we've added?
Really hope to see new tarmac physics combined with improvement on FFB for the German pack.

  • - What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
    Hillclimb, not the car physics.

    - Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
Yes very well, and well communicated.

  • - Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
Partially, was nice. Personnally I prefer to see less communication and more surprise on updates (the Weekly Road Book is just perfect to keep us informed).

Was the new content easy to find in game?

Why, yes! As easy as any of the other stuff. I'd like mouse support on the menus though!

How do you feel about what we've added?

I am most pleased, although I'm generally not a fan of Pikes Peak - you guys have done it so well that I might just start practicing hard for a change.

What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?

    Easy - The 405 T16.

Was it easy to find out what we'd added?

    Yes!

Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?

I was not aware of any DiRT Show? Then again I only visit this here website to check forums, as I am forced to use Internet Explorer which is a heap of... well yeah. Make it available for Firefox users as well, and I'll have a look for this show of yours.

    •  Was the new content easy to find in game?
It was easy to find, but there's kind of a Catch-22 involved with playing it.
You can't play the track in career without buying the car, and running the track in custom events doesn't give you any money.
That leaves you "not playing the track, if you want to play the track".
    • How do you feel about what we've added?
I'm loving everything so far, and looking forward the the new additions as they come, particularly the multiplayer.
I'm also waiting for ACAT capability.
The mix-and-match it allows adds a lot to the replay value.
    • What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
Having both the classic and modern versions of the track.
    • Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
    Yes.
The post you made laying everything out, as well as posts made by other employees,  made everything very clear.
    • Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
    I haven't watched that yet.
I meant to watch it last night, but got distracted with actually playing the game .

Was the new content easy to find in game?

Yes. The hill climb option has been in the game since I started, just locked.

How do you feel about what we've added?

I'm not a Pikes Peak fan as such but I do like the idea of having hill climbs in the game. It adds some variety without deviating from the rally theme.

What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?

As above, both the classic and modern versions. This is a nice touch when it could have been easy to just do the one version.

Was it easy to find out what we'd added?

Yes. Stickied post including patch notes.

Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?

No. Is there a synopsis of the content somewhere?

Was the new content easy to find in game?
    Yes, slotted in nicely.
How do you feel about what we've added?
It is outstanding. Can't wait to see more. The original full gravel variant would be a great final touch to Pikes Peak!
What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
    Everything. You've absolutely nailed it.
Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
Yes, particularly as we knew it was coming and you had primed us with the interface.
Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
Yes, it was great. Loved the candid nature of it. What a great way of collaborating with the community. It is the first time the mystery has really been lifted for me on game development. Your openness really gives us faith in the process and what you are trying to achieve (and the fact that you really understand the essence of what rally is). What you are doing here is better than I could have hoped for. I had lost all hope of a decent rally sim ever coming to the market as it appeared the demand was for pick up and thrash games. What you have created is an incredible foundation on which to build a better game than I had imagined. Keep up the good work and thank you for listening to the community. It feels like we are participating in something brilliant that could truely be the replacement for the great RBR and hopefully last even longer!

    Yes.
    • How do you feel about what we've added?
    Lovin it
    • What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
Having both old and new stages
    • Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
    Yes
    • Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
Yes, thought it was funny, especially when you were unaware that your mic kept cutting out. I'd have made your driver use the 205 instead of the Audi, coz I'm evil like that >:) I liked the fact that you tried explaining why the FFB wasn't ready

•This week we want your feedback on our latest update

I like the car selection, it’s perfect. The most important legendary cars are there, don’t need anything else. I have nothing to say about Pikes Peak, it’s just perfect in every areas and it’s being beautifully recreated to the thinest detail.

I think the Pikes Peak cars power is more accurate, it’s a good start in the right direction. But all other cars feels underpowered, especially Group B and WRC cars.

I’ve read in an interview with Paul Coleman that you guys tried RBR during development of the game but thought the game was harder than the real thing. To me, it sounds like you based your feedback on the NGP mod because I’ve never found RBR hard at all with the physics files that comes with the cars modded into the game… it even feel easier than DiRT Rally sometimes.

Fact is… NGP got released in 2014 if I remember right and game was released in 2004 so, 10 years of people praising the game without NGP cannot be wrong.

RBR is still waaay more fun to drive and here’s why : Cars are more accurately powerful and there is much less lateral grip so we can slide smoothly from one corner to another. The feeling you get out of it is much more satisfying. Also braking distance is longer and you get a better sound feedback from the tyres sliding. Handbrake makes the cars slides much more than in DiRT Rally which in the end is more fun.

Update: As well as what I've said above, I think I've understood what's wrong with DiRT Rally handling... it seems the back of the car is sliding more than the front whereas in RBR the car sliding is more uniform so it gives a more natural, nicer flow and an easier understanding of the car behavior. The result is a more fun gameplay!!

I suggest you to try the Ford Focus WRC ’06 (physics files included) on Japan – Noiker 13,8km stage, it is still a blast to play even after 10 years, it never gets old.

    I’ve uploaded mod here : http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=83773380892164470387

Just unzip and copy/paste files in game folder. Car is replacing Subaru 2003 in game. To revert back to original Subaru 2003, just unzip and copy/paste these files in game folder: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=05607974317384590279

I really hope you will give it a try and that you will change your mind because DiRT Rally is sooo close to RBR, but unfortunately not quiet there yet. 

Yesterday I was reading this thread on reddit (RBR vs DR): https://www.reddit.com/r/simrally/comments/34xvwx/rbr_vs_dirt_rally_physics_and_gameplay/

What got my attention is this point which I tend to agree with:

No actual gravel feedback sound from tires rolling on surface, just ambient pebbles flying about wheel hubs. If one fires up RBR and do a gravel stage you hear tons of feedback from the "grip situation" of your tire to the ground. Very, very informing of how you are pushing it and very telling if your wheel is rolling or slipping in any direction combined with what you are doing.

And please take a look at this thread in the Suggestion Box, it’s something badly missing too in the game: http://forums.codemasters.com/discussion/6156/improvement-proper-modeling-of-tire-spin#latest

•Was the new content easy to find in game? Yes, very easy, nothing to say here.

•How do you feel about what we've added?

Helicopter and national flags throughout the event are welcome additions... I hope to see them in standard rally mode. Classic liveries for Escort MK2, Peugeot 205 etc. is great too. But I think you should focus priority also on fixing these very annoying bugs:

I think you should focus priority on fixing these very annoying bugs:

    - Game keeps resetting resolution and struggling to goes fullscreen. See this thread: http://forums.codemasters.com/discussion/6613/why-game-keeps-resetting-resolution-and-fullscreen-on-alt-tab-its-atrocious#latest

    - Game doesn't saving controller preset and switch to keyboard after each game restart.

    - Game doesn't save customized controller button mapped after game restart.

    - Please add an option to get rid of the ragdoll effect (hands and steering wheel shaking and moving) for keyboard and gamepad users. I'm sure some would really like that the visual input is giving correct feedback of what we're actually doing on controller. It makes me feel like I'm not totally in control of the car. Please allow us to switch it on/off if desired.

•What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?

Audi Quattro S1. Please make the Evo2 version for rally events, this is such a legendary car!!

•Was it easy to find out what we'd added?

Yup! Menu is clear enough though still lack the stage length.

•Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?

It was great. One hour is not enough long to answer people asking in the chat box, especially if your focusing on questions from other social medias (twitter, reddit, etc).

    • Was the new content easy to find in game?
Of course; the UI is fantastic. Clear and very functional. For some reason, I keep forgetting to change the weather conditions on PP, but that's my fault.

    • How do you feel about what we've added?
If I'm honest, I'm not thrilled by the inclusion of hillclimbing as a discipline, when it requires so many resources to create suitable cars and stages and I'd rather see more content for the rally side. However, I have to say that what is there is of exceptional quality and I'm enjoying using it. Because the two versions of Pike's Peak are so good, I hope they can be transferred to rally mode at some point in future too, but that's one for the suggestion box. The three new cars being so different to the existing content is great, but I'm a little disappointed again that they're all historic machines, and nothing that matches the superb modern version of the course that you've built. New engine braking physics seem much better, although now I need to learn how to drive all over again!

    • What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
Full versions of rally cars for custom events! Much appreciated. AI changes are also very welcome; I'd love to see a feature about how the AI are chosen and how they function in an upcoming stream. And, of course, the modelling of the mountain itself.

    • Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
Yes, it was all communicated clearly thanks, including quick updates such as the bugs listed above.

    • Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
Excellent stream, much appreciated. Had to watch on playback because I was working, but it was available quickly. Nice format, with an introduction to new content, an explanation of new features, a 'what's coming next' and a Q&A. Very similar to how Sector 3 have been doing it, and it's much appreciated from both studios - I look forward to the next one. For future suggestions, it would be interesting to have a 'special guest' each time, who could take some questions and give brief overview of what they're working on. For example, the sound lead, the AI programmer, the stage designer etc.

Was the new content easy to find in game?
    Yes, I found it easily.

How do you feel about what we've added?
I like new things. But instead Pikes Peak, I would rather see a FFB update.

What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
    Just the track.

Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
Of course,I always follow this forum.

Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
Yes I watched this Dirt Show.  Near the end I realised that they were talking about releasing this game on console.  I hope this doesn't happen.

Was the new content easy to find in game?
Yes, no problems finding this content in the career, custom event, or setting up a league. However it simply shows up in the league as "Full Course" and no indication that it is Pike's Peak. This might cause confusion if there are more hill climbs added.

How do you feel about what we've added?
Absolutely love the course, this is by far the best rendition of Pike's Peak ever put into a game. That you added both the historic version that was in use for so long, as well as the modern version is fantastic, and a huge hats off to you guys.
The cars I am not so hot on, especially the exclusion of a modern hill climb car. Tajima's SX4 or Millen's Prototype would be great. I also would love to see an electric. On the historic side, Rod Millen's Tacoma would be awesome to see.

What do you love the most in the Pikes Peak Update?
    The course itself. Fantastic.

Was it easy to find out what we'd added?
Yes, but I follow the development of DR closely.

Did you watch this week's DiRT Show? What did you think?
No but I still plan on it.
