marioho 686 Posted June 26 (edited) This week I finally made the jump from automatic to manual gears. Performance has improved, as expected. But I noticed that I’ve been burning more fuel than usual even though I did not change my fuel management at all. I find myself frequently in the red by -0.60 to -1.00 remaining laps of fuel and need to lift and coast and/or switch to lean fuel mix way more than when I ran on automatic. Are there any tips on how to optimize fuel usage by shifting gears? One change I probably have undergone since switching to manual transmission is shifting gears on straights only when on the upper revs count, 10500-11250. Would upshifting earlier reduce my fuel consumption? Edited June 26 by marioho
DaddeRaga 44 Posted June 26 If you upshift earlier, yes, you use less fuel... But that's strange... when I switched to manual gear 1 and a half years ago I didn't have those problems. I learned tho to use lean mix in every brake zone (or slow sections) of a track. and put standard or rich in the straights
marioho 686 Posted June 26 Yeah, I did no expect to get that big of an impact on my fuel consumption. Before turning to manual transmission, I was relatively heavy on ERS micromanagement but usually left the fuel mix on standard the whole race. The only exceptions to fuel management would be if for whatever reason I got a good time advantage before pitting. I would lift and coast more as well as switching to lean mix in order to race under rich fuel on that hot lap coming out of the box. Things use to roll out so well that I could confidently reduce my fuel load at the beginning by 1-2 notches and still go the full length on the lower greens, like +0.08 to +0.12. Those habits stayed, but I can't mess with the fuel load anymore and I still drop by -0.60 to -1.00 estimates before pitting
Getts0388 66 Posted June 26 @marioho Is it possible that you are just getting better/faster at the game and now are using more fuel. Have your lap times gone up? If so, it could be possible it's just you getting better and more out of you car?? I have given up on manual ERS and switched it to auto. Now I just try and make sure I manage my fuel and have no gas left when I cross the finish line.
marioho 686 Posted June 26 @Getts0388 I'm starting my career season 2 today. Pretty soon I'll have my previous lap times to compare, but if I were to take a wild guess I'd say my times have improved. I've got people telling me that, if I have the gap to afford, I should take corners on higher gears to reduce fuel usage – and save some tyre while at it. I will give it a try too. That was me on Reddit, and yes taking corners at higher gears means the engine will rev slower, the wheels will spin less, you'll use less fuel and the engine overall wear will be less. The same goes for qualys....do a "launch flying lap" and check your car, you'll see that your tyre wear, temps and engine temp is off the charts, that's because the AI does the warming and cooldown laps at max fuel mix going full speed.
