[MUST SEE] Fiesta / Germany Medium Tires

So this video is the Fiesta on the German tarmac, with the tire file edited for medium grip for front and rear tires. Absolute night and day difference. You can carry momentum through hairpins, keep the tires spinning and revs up with aggressive driving and handbrake. With the tires on medium, you still have loads of grip on tarmac as you should have, but it just feels SO much more natural as you can tell from the video and how the car moves. You could not take hairpins like this with the current grip levels. Even though I bogged down on that last hairpin, it was my fault for not keeping the revs up and on super grippy tarmac that can definitely happen. This now feels better than RBR on tarmac or any rally sim/game I've played.

You can tell just by the video that this looks much closer to real life videos of how these WRC cars drive on tarmac. This confirms that Codie has a great physics engine under the hood that just really needs some tweaking. Hopefully we won't have to edit files to get this kind of driving for all the cars on tarmac in the future.

Great stuff griev0r, just goes to show the potential of the sim.
The AWD cars on medium tyres (Group A, Group B) are an absolute blast on tarmac and ice, if you manage to give 'em the right setup.
As you say, the physics-engine has a lot of potential, and the current car-physics really aren't far off. Even though i might receive some bashing, i'd say that, at least on tarmac, they're already on the same level as RBR - if not better. And yea, i've tried RBR.. done thousands of km on tarmac stages. 

The tyre model in general needs a bit of polishing though. It's especially noticeable with RWD cars, as the transfer from Grip to Grip loss is a bit too harsh and sudden. Furthermore i hope that "tyregrip_high" isn't the only reason why WRCs are faster in this game. That would really be an extremely simplified model.

Otherwise, pretty nice. I never liked RBR tarmac. A properly setup car squealed its tires at 5 mph and there was no downforce modeled. The setups were also unrealistically tripped out to make things work (at least perusing and using the top setups).

I think the break in coefficient of friction and "bite" is fantastic in the 037. Gives the as-advertised "terror" we were asking for.

No this was a custom event testing session.  I don't think less grip would be a problem in online events tbh, but I'm not doing that.  This is a modern AWD WRC car, and I drove those a LOT in RBR.  This feels better on tarmac.  As far as the 037, near 400 HP and cant be controlled when you put it into a slide on tarmac?  It just spins out.... wrong.  The RWD cars cant be helped with ini changes, they need help from the devs.  The main post of my thread is there is a good physics engine behind this that can really work, it just needs some tweaks and thats what I'm trying to point out with this video.

It's not really changing the tire model, its just an easy ini tweak kinda like going from soft compound tires to medium.

Go to your steam folder, SteamApps/Common/Dirt Rally/cars/models/ffr/tuning - now in this folder is a default tuning file for each event, open the Panzerplatte one (Germany) and replce the last line of that file with the tire grip with:

<Tyres Front="tarm_slick_med" Rear="tarm_slick_med" />

Keep in mind this only changes the Fiesta, and only for the Germany stages.

It looks a bit better, but it still doesn't behave quite right. Personally I think the current model with slightly reduced braking force and increased wheel spin at low speeds would be perfect

Agreed.  It's not perfect, but it's much better and feels great when driving!  Codies really haven't deployed any physics updates or given us any info on what's being worked on on that side of the game since the launch of the early access, so hopefully they have been listening to our feedback and the next pack/patch we'll get some driving model changes.

Good, your times won't be compatible  because of the amended grip files. So you can't cheat by giving yourself more grip.

As OP said: night and day. Thats a much more comprehensible & reasonable behavior.

This is what "we" are looking for; At least for me.

The OP video shows a car with much more (credible) "mass" and momentum. Racing WRC tyres has grip, no doubt, but not like we have in the game (today). Its hard to get a yaw/skid sound from the wheels.

I really wish CM look into this direction and make something remarkable. It´s in their hands, this title can be a myth.

In my opinion it looks like its gone too far and is too easy to slide with it like that, it almost looks closer to dirt 3 in that video honestly. Some where in between is needed, or a different approach
