Computer restarts (Kernel Power 41)

Good morning,

I have been able to play F1 2020 for one day but now it is just crashing everytime I launch my team (just after the loading screen).

I experience this issue when the computer restarts without BSOD nor a particular crash, it just restarts as if I asked it to. In the event viewer, the only thing being said is Critical Error, Kernel-Power, event 41 category 63, keyword (70368744177664),(2). It doesn't indicate much though, if I'm right, as it only says that the previous reboot was not meant to happen.

I had already had this issue on F1 2019. For which I did this topic https://forums.codemasters.com/topic/44951-f1-2019-instant-crash-into-computer-restart/

That was a funny story too. I had been able to play for months, then this issue appeared and kept coming even when I thought I had found a fix.

Finally, I performed a Windows clean install and complet reset of all my hard drives and the issue is gone THOUGH I've never been able to know what was the cause, not even a clue if it was hardware or software. Even now, since it is still installed.

But now, the issue came back through F1 2020. "Through", because everything was great since the clean install. Trackmania (the new one, on which I also had this issue but the clean install fixed it) was working well, and even my first 3 hours of F1 2020 were going well. But today I log in and the issue is back on those two games.

At this point, I just want to know if anyone has a clue about whether it is a hardware problem or a software problem. As I said, it really seems to be an hardware one, PSU related, but how come everything worked well after the clean install, and how come it works properly and never crashes when I push the computer to its limits ?? I'm talking benchmarks or much more demanding games than NBA 2k2020, Trackmania and F1 2019 (games that make my computer reboot more or less randomly and periodically) such as RDR 2, The Division 2, AC Origins, Hitman 2, TW3 or GTA V.

Maybe a Codemasters' F1 issue ? Like it installs something my computer doesn't like ?

Specs i5 4690k, GTX 1070 KFA², 8gb DDR3, MSI Z97 SLI Krait, Cooler Master G650, Samsung EVO SSD (system and games on it), KFA² SSD and Seagate HDD. And I have a dual screen (but only play on one and have troubleshooted this by unplugging the other one).

Peripherics : Xbox one controller. Also plugged in : Logitech G502 mouse, CM Storm TriggerZ keyboard, basic logitech speakers (pretty much troubleshooted those too)

Replications : pretty random considering it now systematically crashes during tasks I was doing previoulsy fine. But in the end, systematic ?

Troubleshooting : You'll find plenty of them in the first topic. + clean installing everything.

Next steps : Restore PC to backup points prior to F1 2020 installation and retry.
Another clean install this time only with F1 2020.

Turbo mode was unstable on my Devil's Canyon (i7-4790K) so I just disabled it in BIOS. 4GHz was fast enough.

Go through everything, SSD firmwares, BIOS updates.

Too early for 2004 of Windows.

I had tried the BIOS update (on your suggestion already) and the SSD firmwares update too.

I had no choice but to take the 2004 Windows version in the Creation Tool :/ But it worked fine for 5 days of troubleshooting, 3 hours of F1 2020 and 10 of Trackmania. And all of a sudden today it came back. Can it still be windows ?

On my way to the BIOS disabling Turbo mode then

Crashes still happen with Turbo Mode disabled

Thanks, I'll use that for a new clean install if restore point doesnt work

But anyway, do you still think it can be a hardware problem even if it worked sometimes before january and then worked again (for a time) on a clean install ?

The Nvidia drivers are garbage and then trying to run when walking would be best. They don't give a hoot about 10 series, you need to upgrade (their thinking).

I'm going to take a look at 2004 in a while.

I understand all that but then how come it worked just yesterday. It was the same drivers, the same windows version, the same game version etc.

And even if they wanna push me to upgrade it isnt supposed not to be playable at all

Also, interseting (lol) to note that time trial, and so in game engine doesn't crash. I'm able to run as much laps I want in time trial, but I can't launch a GP nor a My Team mode. Maybe it's about the engine when in barracks of the paddock interface... But still it crashes on trakmania so I dont expect any logic.

I could play online no issues when TT *was* crashing. Maybe time spent in menus is bad and playing the actual game on track is good.

Plus TT would only crash under specific conditions, unlike the beta which just crashed on exit, so I think that might've been Steam.

Anyway doesn't alter the fact the GPU vendors have got greedy since the bitcoin mining market blew up. They want to sell you new product more frequently, what better way than driver soup that tastes like sour milk?

When I try to initiate the process, it says there exists a newer version and I cannot get through...

PS : It's DMUJ on another account

Yeah you need to clean install, create the USB media and boot to it.

Yes, that happens when I doubleclick on this exe to create the USB media.

"A newer version of this tool is available. Download and execute this version to continue."

My 2 options are : "Download the newer version" sending me to the new 2004 ISO on MS website.

and "Close"

Hmmm also

I may have screwed something. (really a great day)

During manipulations to get to safe mode, I pressed F8 on boot without knowing that it doesnt work anymore for W10.

Then it booted on a loading screen that only ended on a black screen.

I did the reperation thing with a USB flash drive but did'nt work.

Now I boot on a black screen with "A2" in the corner just after the BIOS screen.

What do I do ?

I was going to go reset and clean install anyway, can I still do it and ignore this or is it a problem that needs to be addressed before ?

A2 is a BIOS stop code. MSI board? Probably the USB drive (non-bootable) inserted....

managed to fix this but it ****** me off so much I think I'll get back to operations troubleshooting tomorrow

By then if @steviejay69 will have sent me a executable media creation tool 1909 it would be optimal

Thanks in advance and for everything you've already done

I will upload the media somehow might be a PM but I have now tested 446.14 on 2004 with Steam overlay working and GFE.

I will PM you as soon as I have something.

Thanks !

In the meantime, as the Recovery Tool erased pretty much of the installation in the end, I performed another 2004 clean install.

And yes I can confirm that Trackmania and F1 2020 run just fine (despite some strange graphics bug I never had on the latter) without crash for the moment. I don't know if it's a question of time (maybe Windows gets overwhelmed somehow somewhere at some point) or of installed programs (I may have forced my way into Photoshop but still it cohabited fine for a few days) but in the beginning, everything works.

That's why I don't think it's about hardware nor bios/bios settings nor drivers. (Honestly I'd be glad to be sure just to buy a new PSU instead of dragging this issue for months)

But if it's software, why does it happen all of sudden, why no BSOD etc..

HEADACHE

Updating for the guy who'll have the same issue and look on 450 forums just like I was not long ago : Buying a new PSU solved my problem and it appears to be that in a majority of similar cases. Don't bother too much with troubleshootings like I did.
