Buggy Hungary: power not going through, issues with steering and curious one-offs

Recommended Posts

1.      I'm doing a 16 events first season on My Team. Today was Hungary. There were two different bugs, possible four. In order of importance, (a) after a buggy pit, my engine lost power even though the game was registering maximum throttle input as intended; (b) looks like the game wasn't registering full steering input now and then; (c) a repeated question from Will Buxton right after the GP and (d) a messy grid after a festival of penalties being applied pre-race.

They're all recorded on video and I'll go one by one in the order above:

1.a. 0:39-11:34. First I messed up the pit lane entry as I was trying to read my tyre temperatures. One flashback. When it resumed (0:48) Jeff came babbling as if I had completed the pit stop already. I instantly flashbacked again and he came on as if the pit stop had completed and I had one more stop to make, which wasn't the case as I had a one-stop strategy. I fumbled with the MFD to check if he didn't change the strategy on his own but it was ok, Medium tyres. Messed up the restart and did multiple flashbacks as I was checking the MFD.

Finally left the pit (1:58) and Jeff chimed in correct this time, saying we had completed our pit strategy, but after I cross the pit lane exit the car won't power up normal. I'm on full throttle, but it felt like he gave up being a racing car to pursue his dreams of being a boat on wheels. Queue in multiple flashbacks. At 2:36 I decided to check my controller calibration just to see if it was not failing on outputting the full trigger press, but as you can see it was ok. The HUD throttle indicator seems to attest to that too. Multiple flashbacks.

I decided to make a Mid Session save (3:53), another pass on the calibration screen, multiple flashbacks and then I reload the mid session save (5:18) to no avail. Even checked the Race Director to see if I was flagged as having some kind of mechanical failure but nothing came up. Then I restarted the session (8:02) and though the start was a mess, you can see power is back to normal.

Now you'll excuse me but I screwed up the clip order when editing the video and from 8:48 to 9:24 I have a clip from after the issue was semi-resolved. I'll get back to it.

On 9:24 I restarted the game, checked the store for those yummy goodies then went back to my bugged Hungary session reloading the mid save. As you can see at 10:08 Holy Mary of reboots blessed me with my engine power back. Multiple flashbacks as in the meantime I had become a fisherman and had to relearn how to drive a F1 car. Once I finally get the turn rightish at 10:42, Holy Mary came in with a trolling switcheroo and my car instantly morphed into a intangible bus stop at the middle of the circuit while following the racing line. There is no cut, it was as jarring as shown. I reloaded with fear in my soul and tears in my eyes, passed wide from the racing line to avoid that cursed spot. It is "normal" gameplay from there on. The stretch from 8:48 to 9:24 I mentioned before was meant to be slotted in sometime here, as it was the replication of the untouchable bus stop glitch.

1.b. 11:35-11:45. The steering bug. When the overlaid red arrow pops up I'm actually on maximum steering input, but the game won't register it. In the video it is not shown unfortunately but this issue bugged me the whole session, even on Practice. When I noticed it, I kept my thumb unmoving on the analog stick, popped up te settings, went to the controller calibration tab with the right hand and the D-Pad and checked how if the steering was being registered correctly. It was. I can't guarantee that my thumb did not move slightly in the mean time but I believe so.

1.c. 11:45 onwards. Buxton asked me twice about my relationship with De Vries. Yeah, uneventful, but since I was at it already...

1.d. 0:00-0:38. On second view, after checking the Qualy standings, I think it ok. But this race was a mess of penalties with me originally positioned 11th on the grid, ending up in 3rd position to have a nice start, overtake both Bottas and Vettel and have Hamilton retiring for mechanical failures. I included it in the clip because I thought Leclerc had pole and the 5 place penalty should have put him further back. Turns out it was just a penalty bonanza with the original grid being as follows:

And the starting grid as you can see on the video:

Indeed the Monaco without walls.

2.       PS4
3.       1.04 shown as 1.03
4.       My Team
5.       Multiple flashbacks and mid session reloads, two race restarts and one relaunch of the game.
6.       After retrying multiple times I closed and relaunched the game.
7.       PS4 controller.
8.       Video, timestamped as seen on "1".

I have been watching this forum since the game launched with interest. The improvements in the handling model, praised pretty much universally, made me think that this year, just maybe, the game was worth purchasing. Didn't get the 19 game, the first time ever I have not bought the game (after the shambles of 15 I have always purchased second hand after all patches). With bug reports like this and all the others, added to the legacy bugs I fear I won't be getting 20 either. It's such a shame that a game with so much potential suffers from so many issues. I can only hope that the next generation engine brings an improvement in quality, or that come the end of the license period the FIA decided to move on to pastures new. So sad.

@mahmutcan0163 no need to quote a whole beefy post, just tag the user. Makes scrolling easier. Anyway: yes, though I don't know what bug you're referring to from my list they were all one-time occurrences. No idea what happened, but it happened only once and never again. A bazillion hours put into the game since then and not a trace of these things repeating.

And I changed my 3+ years old controller so I can't say 1.b was indeed a bug or only my pad failing on me.

@ChasteWand this comment also somewhat addresses your post. I mean, everyone has their own "now this is just a cheap iteration of the franchise with no real improvements to the formula" benchmark. I for one haven't bought a new FIFA game since FIFA 18 even though I've been playing that franchise and PES since 2004 without fail, but your take may be different and FIFA 21 may seem like enough of an improvement over FIFA 20, I don't know. Speaking for me, F1 2020 was a 100% justified day-one purchase for me and my time with it has been all fun though and through, with all bugs I encountered being reported in my post history. They're not detrimental to my enjoyment and have all resolved in one way or another.

Not everyone goes through every single bug that gets reported.

@marioho I'm not too sure it really was the controller, because if you look at the video again, you'll see that you applied full throttle, but the car simply didn't do what it should have done. So your controller behaved normally, just the game didn't. Happy to hear that the problem resolved itself - I'd probably bitten in my keyboard if something similar had happened to me. As a matter of fact, I applaud your patience! I would have blown a fuse way earlier than you obviously did!

Hahaha thanks, @ostendorfjens! I should have clarified though. It's not that I'm blaming the controller; it just coincided that after that sore experience in Hungary I got a new pad. The issue never reoccurred so I can't fix the blame on either the game or a malfunctioning DS4 for sure.

Anyhow I'm just happy this was all a one and only type of thing. Seeing my car turning into an electrical scooter with a crooked steering shaft wasn't my idea of fun.

I appreciate that every user doesn't experience every bug, however the more time I spend with successive releases the more I see the legacy issues/bugs and how the core gameplay stagnates in favour of new features and cosmetics. The yearly release model of sports games with the ever growing popularity of microtransactions and patching unfinished products is abhorrent. Don't get me started on fifa!

I am well on the way to becoming a grumpy old man, many would argue I've already completed the journey, however I feel there is still room for improvement... 👹

Hahaha I get you, totally! In more ways than one it was a heart-rending the day I noticed I wasn't get my kicks out of FIFA and PES anymore. So much history and good times playing them all, be it alone or with friends... When I realized I was being made a fool by EA and that I did not have Konami's effort anymore, I simply gave up on both franchises. Maybe I'll snatch FIFA 21 when it gets to those wicked low prices next year, but I'm fed up with them.

I'm new to Codemasters' F1 games, with F1 2019 being my first dip into the franchise. But I felt enough improvements in the handling model that would justify buying the new game at some point, maybe even at full price. The handling + AI + quality of life + new game mode + reworked drivers market though was a day-one combination for me. Still ways to go but good enough for my taste.

There's a big subjective element in there though. I mean, there are people out there playing with TC and brake assists on full. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but how could such a player feel the improvements from 2019 > 2020? If they say it is not enough to buy the new game, I'm in no position to argue.

I've been following the F1 series from Codemasters for years. Bought F1 2010, F1 2012, F1 2015, F1 2017, and finally F1 2019 and F1 2020. And particularly the last three games I mentioned show, in my humble opinion, a very solid improvement. The current game in particular stands head and shoulders above its predecessor.

With that being said, it does not mean that it's a perfect game, not by a long shot. In its current state, it's bug-riddled, sometimes difficult to understand, some things just don't add up. But the car's handling is superb, way better than it was in F1 2019, so even with a gamepad, decent results are possible. On top of that, I've been waiting for the "My Team" mode for years - ever since F1 2010 came out, I was hoping they'd finally do something like this. So I like this game very much, I really do.

Now, if Codemasters would only be able to exterminate all the bugs ...
