Zakarex 0 Posted July 22 I’m struggling with the fuel consumption practice program, any one have any tips that will make be able to complete it? I’m getting very close, but either am too slow for the min lap time or using too much fuel! Any advice that will help me improve would be lovely! Thanks! 😁
Falstojudilofa 115 Posted July 22 Manual gears? Try to shift earlier and save a little bit of fuel. Other than that, just lift and coast. Is your braking point at 100 meters? Stop applying throttle at 120 or even 125 and brake around 90. You will see the bar going to purple a little bit. Whenever your bar shifts to the red, you know you could've lifted earlier. Does your delta time go red? Brake a bit later. Also good to know: don't do this in FP1 if you struggle too much. In FP2 the track conditions are better, so it's easier to get a better time. Zakarex 0 Posted July 22 Thanks very much! I didn’t really think about trying it In fp2! I will try these things!! 😎
PJTierney 4,908 Posted July 22 Manual gears definitely helps. Also, don't light up the rear tyres on corner exit, you'll burn fuel that way. Normally what I do is lift at the 150 board, brake at 100. If I'm fast enough that gets me to Purple but if I have to chase the time I'll go flat-out for the second half of a lap and accept the Green.
marioho 686 Posted July 22 Are you on manual gears? It really helps. There are basically three things to keep in mind to save fuel here: 1. Lift & Coast. Go off the throttle completely when approaching a braking zone on those long straights. I usually lift 50m before my braking point and brake later by some 10-20m to compensate for the speed I already lost. I don't bother with the technique when in slower complexes though. Lift and coast is at its optimal when you're coming in hot, high speeds vroom vrooom nyoooong. If you're like on 6th gear, you're wasting time and not saving enough fuel. 2. Lower revs. This forks into two different applications. Basically, lower revs means less fuel being burned in those yummy 8 cylinders i.e. less fuel consumption. Revs are quite literally the speed at which your engine is working. There is this complex relationship between gear ratios, torque, engine power and wheel speed that we don't need to get into now, suffice to say that you can go comfortably at say 150kph on both 4th gear and 5th gear, but you'll be burning less fuel if you do it on the 5th as the engine will be running at a lesser rate (revs). Thus, convert it into practice: (2.1) try as much as possible to take the apex one gear higher than usual/the suggested and (2.2) short shift always. Try to short shift for real on the power gears (1-3) and to short shift just slightly from there on. By just slightly I mean on the 9500-10800 RPM or on the low 11000s when going 7 to 8. This will save you so much fuel that relying on lift & coast couldn't even be necessary. Oh, and conversely never downshift early as the WEEEEEE the engine gives is the sound of a beast gorging in petrol. 3. Easy on the throttle. You're wasting fuel if your wheels are spinning in place, as that fuel was burned without propelling you forwards. This is easier if you drive with traction control off or on medium, but know that feedback vibration you get when you get back on throttle after a corner? That's your wheels working at the edge of grip. Anymore throttle and they will spin in place, as there ain't any more grip available for them. And less throttle means they will comfortable drive you forwards without wasting energy on slipping. Don't go greedy on the throttle on corner exit and you're golden.
