"Fancy" Xbox One controller

Recommended Posts

Any one using one of those controllers that has extra buttons (usually 2 or 4 paddles on the back/underside of the pad) like Xbox elite or Scuf for driving on? Specifically on F1 games possibly? Do they work ok for mapping the likes of ERS and fuel management on then? Or is it too much of a hassle and more cumbersome?

Scrogs! Never tried them but would love to get my hands on one of those. Not long ago Sony announced a back button adapter for the PS4 controller. I can only imagine how nice those things are to play with!

On Sony side though, you can only "clone" another button. Meaning if you assign downshift and upshift to the back paddles mirroring what Square and X do on the controller, you'll still have Square and X downshifitng and upshifting your gears. I don't know how the Xbox Elite controller works but if they were indeed recognized as extra, new buttons than I would definitely consider buying one!

As things stand though, I'm more interested in an entry-model wheel.

If memory serves me correct, the paddles just act as the buttons they use (for example, one of the paddles that uses the A button, would only use A, not an extra button) so you can't have extra button mappings with paddles unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies folks. I understand that the paddles only map the buttons that the console has. I like the button configuration for braking, throttle and manual gears that I currently have on my standard Xbox controller. I was hoping that the actions on it's dpad and right thumbstick could be mapped to paddles. For maybe ERS/fuel mix/brakes and things. I've thought about getting a wheel but don't want pedals! If I can find a wheel with gear shifting and some form of braking and throttle on it then I'd get it. Maybe use the wheels gears up/downshifter for throttle and brake and would need to use auto gearing....which would be a shame as I'm enjoying using manual gears on my pad.

I don't think there's anything preventing you from binding the D pad to the back paddles, Scrogs! It should work as you intend.

Throttling and braking on a wheel is harder though as usually they don't come with the same degree of variability of a controller's trigger, they're not analog inputs. Most of the time it's binary, either on or off. Like no matter how you pressed them, the buttons and paddles on the wheel would either register full throttle or no throttle at all.

Maybe those more expensive models have analog inputs but I don't know any from the top of my head.

Blimey!! I've just seen some of the prices of those fancy controllers. Wireless ones being up to 150 sovs or more 😲. It might be cheaper for me to just get F1 2020 cos it has one button ERS deployment.  😉 Yes, unfortunately, the wheel is a no go.
