Qualifying tires / Tires to start the race

Recommended Posts

I'm missing / forgetting something obvious I'm sure..

I was under the impressions if you reach Q3 you start the race on the tires you set your fastest Q3 lap with?

However I did 1 Q3 lap and was happy with the time so went back to garage.

I'm starting on 30% worn softs?

Now, I went back out in Q2 to secure top ten, so that's the only set that could be anywhere near that level of worn.

I start on Q2 tires? Or am I'm missing something obvious?

The game is following the rules of real F1. The top 10 start on the tyres they set their fastest time with in Q2. I assume it's done this way so they have a way to make a starting tyre choice, without depriving spectators/viewers of Q3 being an absolute fastest time shoot-out on the fastest tyre compound.

Riiiiight,  knacked myself going back out on the same tires in Q2, that's fine as long as it's a lesson learned for next time.

Thanks mate.

A tutorial vid on this in game would be nice.

Watch some real F1 .

(I do still think a proper manual for the game would be helpful though.)

Not even that, just add another tutorial vid in the menu explaining full qualifying, same as it explains all the practice sessions, would be perfectly fine.

I'm sure I'm not the only one it would help.

While I can watch bits and pieces these days, and keep up with the news to some degree,  watching real life Qualy and things is not really possible.

3 second Google search, first hit, quote from the Wikipedia:

"Drivers may complete as many laps as they choose. However, the top ten drivers must start the race on the set of tyres they used during their fastest lap time in the second qualifying period. These may only be changed if qualifying and the race are held under different weather conditions, or if a tyre is damaged as a result of an accident. The remaining ten drivers are free to start the race with any tyres they choose."

You do Q1 on one set. Then Q2 on a brand new set. The Q2 set you will start the race on if you get through to Q3. DO NOT use those tyres in Q3. Codies don’t highlight this in the tyre screen so you have to remember. I usually do this:

Q1: Softs 1

Q2: Softs 1 and then Softs 2

Q: Softs 1 and then Softs 3.

I have no idea but I assume you use your quali tyres if you end in the top 10.

Also, keep in mind that you will have a set of soft exclusive for q3: so it's better to use that set in q3 instead of another one as it will be the one that will be sent back regardless of its usage. In example, if you use a set in q1 and a set in q2 you may have 2 sets of softs left: one named q1 or q2 and the last one named q3. If you don't use the one named q3, it will be sent back unused and you won't be able to bring a new set of softs to the race

That Q3 set is only returned if you participate in Q3. The rest gets to use it during the race.

No. This set is specifically for Q3. If you don't make it to Q3. The set is not avaliable at all. (when you click through the avaliable tyre sets at the beginning of Q3 session it will say 'for Q3 extra' or something like that (picture below))

Yes, it does work like I said. I have definitely used two sets of fresh soft tyres in races after using two sets of softs during qualifying. It also matches the real life regulations (more or less, in real life you don't have to return that specific tyre, just one of the same specification).

Yes, I was assuming you hit q3, if you don't the q3 set can be taken to the race. But if you hit q3 and do not use the q3 set you lost a new set of softs

Pretty much this. It took me way too long to figure out this is how it works. I was always confused why I didn't have enough fresh tyres in the race even though I definitely had one more set after qualifying. The game could've done a better job explaining this. And it seems that the real life regulations aren't as strict. You simply have to return a set of the mandatory specification, not the specific set that was reserved for Q3.
