race distance

if the race distance is not 100% but 50% or 25%, is the tire and engine life (components and gearbox) reduced to the race distance ?
Those. race 50%, then everything else will wear out twice as fast ?

Yes. But it feels like it least the tyres wear a bit slower, more like 60% or so instead of 50%.

I certainly wish these components wear out faster in shorter races, especially tires and gearbox. I think about 125% wear rate of the current 50% race tire model would be ideally realistic.

The gearbox already wears at an insane rate so that one needs fixing. I had to use about one per three races.

At which moment do you shift gears? On my 100% career I have a wear of 45/50% after 6 races. I know there is a post about that on the bug section.

Yeah I wondered when I saw this, what distance are you running? I haven't had any problem with gearbox, if anything it lasts longer than predicted.

I remember seeing people discuss about this and I think it's a bug? Under normal circumstances the gearbox should wear at a rate as RS Phil said, about where it shouldn't be anywhere near to be a concern even without upgrades. 

Btw, I have suggested gear and the gear shift prompt noise on, may be you should try that too because you might be shifting too soon or too late.

There is or at least was a bug, indeed. There's even a Master Thread on the forum just for that.

But if you peek at the latter pages you'll see the coincidence of human error and bad habits is quite high. From people freaking binding the downshift command to the same button they use to brake and players demanding Codemasters roll back the handling model they had been using for God knows how many years because they can't downshift like machine gun anymore.

I’m so confused by this gearbox wear, I go three races where it is about where I expect (12-13%) and then one where it is at least double and I can’t work out what I’m doing differently between tracks. I know different tracks have different characteristics but it just seems way off.

During the red part. The biggest problem is that it's inconsistent. One or two races it was about 15%, other's it's 25% or so.

In the last game in 2019, one box was enough for 6 races (according to the rules), the wear was about 55-60%, but sometimes there was over 70% wear in 6 races and in the last 6th race gears sometimes disappeared.

What red part? The red shift lights on the HUD/steering wheel? The red part of the racing line? When the background of the gear indicator turns red?

Bonkers question, it's just that I think gearbox wear comes in two flavors: from general use (i.e. you're wearing just by shifting whenever) and from downshifting too harshly.

If you're upshifting before the last set of lights goes up you're shifting a bit too early, but no extra damage is likely to be done this way.

Now if you're upshifting after all the lights go to and the background turns red, there's extra damage. Same with downshifting too rapidly, to which you'll be presented with the sound of a struggling engine.

When people are comparing how many races a gearbox lasts it's presumably worth considering which which races these are, since gearbox wear will be greater at some tracks than others. In real life I believe Monaco is one of the most demanding for example.
