What you want to see from GRID

Recommended Posts

Online need more than just a perfect driving model for online to survive.

Codemasters got things pretty much right with GRID 1 online, after a couple of patches, that added colliosn forward and all assists off hosting option and getting rid of ebay cars so we could have a fairer race online. ( kick vote was still mess up thou )

GRID 2 was a big failure online compared to GRID 1.

With PC GRID Autosport, the jury still out if online will be good enough to have the longevity of a GRID 1 or Flatout 2.

Sure if you got lots of online racing friends, you can get together for a night and have some great racing in a custom host, like we did with GRID 1. :) But for the other times you just hop online for some unplanned racing in a public host, can you still get in some good racing online with GRID Autosport?

I think you are missing my point, Purple, what you have written you have written a thousand times before.

I'm talking about seeing the wood for the trees, the first principle is the driving model, if that isn't right why bother going any further ?
Don't matter how long your lists of wants and don't wants are, if the driving model is wrong what follows is all pie in the sky.
If the driving model is right much will be forgiven and we will patiently wait for all the stuff we have asked for a thousand times before.

Y'see, CM employees are only people, they are  not aliens, telling them over and over and over and over what we want is like some old harridan bending their ear every 5 mins, it ain't the way . . . if we want to get the goods we have to be their friend, treat them nice, give them a sweetie . . . when something starts to sound like a broken record, for god's sake change the record . .

I would like to see Codemasters be successful and getting the online right will help a lot.

In my 9 years of racing online, I have seen only two racing games ( sims not included ) that had a strong online after the first year, Flatout 2 and GRID 1. It pretty easy to screw up online to have it die off in a couple of months. It a lot harder to get it all right so online has longevity.

I may sound like a broken record, but with the history of PC racing online and what Codemasters has posted, I got reason to be worry about GRID Autosport public playlists having longevity.

Also about the new handling model, online with GRID 1, I would say at least 80% of players were using all assists ON. You did not see the all assists OFF hosts having full lobbys. The new handling model look to be more simier than no assist in GRID 1. Will GRID 1 online players that like the better grip of all assists on, be happy using cars in the playlists hosts that will go sideways if give car to much gas out of the corner? Think BMW touring car and F3000.

In GRID 1, I like racing with assists off and was one the guys asking Codmeasters to add the no assists host option in v1.2 patch.

In Grid 1 the majority did race all assists on . . .and will do so in GAS.
You can't in one breath say you want bumper to bumper racing and in the next say you want assists off !
If GAS forces people to use assists off there will be hell to pay.
The message for so long has been; "Jump in and drive" . . . nothing to set before racing.

But don't you think we have bent CM's ear for long enough ?

A General will attack what is perceived to be the strongest opposition, but when the full frontal battle is making no headway he will search out other options, new directions. The "Broken Record" I'm talking about is the continual repetition of the same wants and gripes. CM are well aware of those, but if we want them to come up with the goodies we need to change tack, find a new direction.
Repeat the same thing over and over and it will be perceived either as chinese water torture and ignored, or heard so often it dulls the senses to such a degree it no longer registers.

Tell me something, Purple, would you do all you could for your best buddy ? and would he do all he could for you ? . . so why don't all of us, and I mean ALL of us, make Loore our best buddy ?

I always raced assists off in GRID 1, but only in assists off sessions as it was slower. The reason given by most people for racing with assists is that it was faster. Loore has stated that in GAS assists off will be quicker. More sensible I think as it rewards driving skill. So I predict more playing with assists off even in sessions where they are allowed.

Are you sure the handling is great in GAS?

Some things can just be listed; some things have to be tried.  Hence, no demo = no pre-order.

I was thinking wrong about the playlists lobbys, I was thinking all assists would be off for some reason. I read Loore post and it look like player will have the option to go with all assists OFF or ON.
Loore said:
Public lobbies will be user defined, you could run with no assists while someone else can run with assists. Forcing users to run with no assists wouldn't be fair on those that don't want to, or are new to the game etc

In a custom lobby the host has the ability to set what assists are available so if you want all assists off then that's great, you can do just that.

Codemasters won't be forcing players to go without assists in a playlist host, but it does sound like if you want to win, assists OFF will be the way to go. Which would be OK with me.

Loore said:
In GRID assists made you faster, so most people used them. In Forza they make you slower so you are rewarded for racing with assists off.
You should be faster without assists than with them in Autosport.

But GRID 1 players that are expecting to be faster with all assists ON, may be in for a surprise online with GAS. One side benefit of this would be griefers being left behind after first lap. I doublt most griefers will take the time to get good at racing with no assists.

Also we race bumper to bumper in all assists off host. Just needed to be more careful with the gas. Definitely more of a challenge to have a prefect race where you did not give the guy behind you the opportunity to pass you.

There was a couple of Nissan 350's (or 370Z's) in the launch vid, only for a couple of seconds but 2 cars on track and none of the solo short sprint stuff from G2.

Loore did also say that it's specialist drift circuits with 2 cars on track (like the Formula Drift series in the US).

Also good throttle control is gonna be needed instead of just throw it in and boot it.

I've been playing a bit of drift this weekend and yeah, throttle control is definitely needed. It's not so much throw it in a corner, point it in the right direction and jobs a good'un but you have to fight it every step of the way.

You'll need to think about your entry speed, entry angle, then comes the throttle control and I love the way you find yourself thinking "can I hold it for just a few more seconds" before losing the drift and ending up doing a rather pretty pirouette.

Yes, you get two cars on the track at once and the dirft events take place on special drift circuits. Yas Marina has one for example (which was in our announcement trailer).

The points system has been tweaked as well, you don't get scored on just the drift itself, but things the like flow, angle etc. Drift also has its own dedicated UI elements such as the angle of the car etc

How much of a difference does assists off make?

In Grid 1 it seemed to make prolonging a drift easier and allowed slower speed drifting, while making High speed drift a lot easier to master using the throttle almost as rear wheel steering.

Yep Cap; plenty of beavers around here - though they're generally pretty good at keeping their heads down.  Summer has arrived here.  It's always rather startling.  About to get wet though.
