kylebisme
For those that haven't touched VR mode, the problem is immediately obvious upon starting the game. Here's what the main menu looks like in VR mode compared to flatscreen: And for good measure, here's the brightness setting page in both VR and flatscreen: And yes, you can turn that setting down in VR mode which makes the menus look good, but doing so utterly crushes the dark areas once you actually get into a stage. So this is what stages look like in VR compared to flat screen at the default 1.0 brightness setting: It seems when actually in a stage the brightness issue is a different one, as leaning forward so that your chin is touching the steering wheel actually looks good, but note how bright the bright areas are at a normal seating position, the trees in the distance beyond the starting gate in particular are glowing so brightly that it's impossible to see where the tops of them end. All pics were taken at default medium settings, VR pics were cropped and scaled to reasonably match the flatscreen views but no other editing was done. I've included the unedited vr pics below for anyone who cares to see those. Anyway, as I asked in the title, is there any good workaround for the VR brightness issue, and has there been any suggestion it will ever be patched? kylebisme
I've determined that the brightness issue in menus is separate fro m the one in stages, the latter is result of the exposure effect being excessive when using the driver view, as can be seen in the following two screenshots: From the driver camera view it's impossible to discern how tight the road is in the upcoming bend, it's all just one solid white blob, but switching to dashboard view brings out all that missing detail. Unfortunately, using anything other than the driver camera view in VR makes for a rather unpleasant experience in its own way, So I'm still curious, is there any good workaround for this issue, and has Codemasters ever suggested it might get patched? If you move your head forward in the regular cockpit view with VR the picture also getting much better in sweden. Its some stupid filter they must have added that is overexaggregated but since its all getting better moving the view forward id consider it a bug. It have been reported but they dont care so dont bother. Edited September 13, 2020 by somethingthing
Bevas
Hi, I've got my Reverb G2 recently. I am experiencing the same issue, sadly nothing works for me either... @PJTierney Please, could you make any statement about this VR issue? I saw that 1.17 is the last planned patch for Dirt Rally 2.0. But is there any chance to make another one that fix this issue? I think DR2.0 will be here for some time and I think this issue is a big deal for many people... Maybe it isn't look that bad on the screenshot, but in HDM it is different story, because the bright/overexposed road fills the whole lenses sweet spot. I am not sure if it is related to some in game graphic effect. If it is the case, please give us option to disable it, at least via xml config. But seems it occurs only in VR, so maybe it is somewhere in VR implementation, maybe something that can't be easily fixed, so maybe it's not worth the effort/money, so maybe I just answered to my self 😞 But it would be nice to get some official answer. PS: I am also experiencing this issue, maybe it is related..
Social Media & Community Team PJTierney Posted February 24, 2021 Social Media & Community Team Share Posted February 24, 2021 Hey there. This has been discussed a few times, and is a result of the auto-exposure post-processing effects overcompensating for the amount of screenspace taken up by the car's interior. There are no plans to patch this, however a workaround you may want to try is to adjust either the head position or the eyes width separation settings to have more of the windshield on the screen, thus reducing the chances of the auto-exposure kicking in. A good frame of reference would be to look at your co-driver and sit as far forward in the car as he does.
Bevas
Oh I see, but unfortunately neither of the workarounds did work for me. 1. Head position -> Seems that the most significant element that kicking in the auto-exposure effect is the windshield sun protector, which is pitch black. Almost all cars have one 🙂 So even if I move the head position to "most" forward. Auto-exposure is still active. 2. eyes width separation -> I've found eyeDistanceMultiplier in hardware_settings_config_vr.xml, but seems changing values seems to have no effect on Reverb G2. Only with some extreme values like 5.000000 my HDM goes black 🙂 and I have to restart it. @PJTierney Anyway, thank you very much for the reply and issue clarification. Racer37
https://www.kegetys.fi/dirt-rally-2-vr-eye-accomodation-fix-v1-0/ I use this guys mod. Brightness only affects menus, I have set to .10 I believe. You need to adjust lumananceminrange back to 600 or night stages will be too dark. I have my brightness in this config set to 1.1. he defaults to 1.15. Might be worth trying out. Edit: oops should have looked at the post above mine a little better. Bevas
@Alain67 @Racer37 Thank you for the tip. I tried the mod in few locations recently and works very well so far. Also big thank you to Kegetys! Also for RBR VR mod 😄
Solution PolarClaw Posted April 26, 2021 Solution Share Posted April 26, 2021 That is a very useful tip. That MOD makers the game so much more playable. There was a update to 'Dirt Rally 2 VR eye accomodation fix v2.0'. In the new version it's possible to set the day and night lighting separate and the MOD blends between this settings. Also I really like the Haze Reduction feature for Finnland. That is a very superb MOD which addresses the most annoying bugs in DR2 (VR lighting and performance fog). Link: kegetys eye accomodation fix v2.0 I'm a bit disappointed from Codemasters that this lighting bug, which was criticized from the beginning, was never corrected by the developers and that a MOD was necessary to fix this.

I fully agree, I'm very disappointed in the VR development in general, all feedback from the community regarding VR is ignored from the start by the developers and some headsets (like the best current headset, the Reverb G2) aren't supported at all. Let's hope that DR3 gets a proper VR implementation..
Alain67
Merci @Peter Mathen et @GuusHugo et @Kegetys Je viens de tester la Finlande, et la Pologne c'est parfait maintenant. AyrtonSdS
I really like this mod. Thanks to the creators. Does anyone have any settings they've tuned on it? I shut of the value that changes the ground cover and also the focus to the center of the screen. I'm still testing with it though. Makes Sweden so much better. kylebisme
Aliain67, I got so excited after installing this mod that I forgot to come back and say thank you. It works wonders. Racer37, thanks for the settings, they work great.

AyrtonSdS
Just an FYI on this mod which I love. As it states you can adjust the settings while running the game. I have found the Night and Day settings are named incorrectly. If you are looking to brighten the night settings you have to adjust the Gamma on the setting that says "Day." Took me 6 months to realize this.

The "Nightime" settings don't seem to do anything.
