DiRT Rally World RX Update

Recommended Posts

It's interesting to see that the some players did not suffer such a framerate drop in the RX races... Can someone who found no issues share their graphics settings?

When I first booted the RX race up the framerate was horrible and all over the place. It improved greatly after reducing everything to High and enabling V-sync.

What other changes would make it run better without sacrificing the visuals too much?
Previously I never had the need to go into graphics settings and never realised there's so many options to tweak in that menu ;]

Fantastic work with the rallycross update, playing it feels just like what watching the World RX Championship makes it seem like. I only had time to play the first Open Championship and some custom events (trying to choose one car to buy), and I didn't encounter anything negative. I have a GT 750M, and I found the RX content runs as well as the rest of the game typically does (30-60 fps, 1366x768 medium-high), including with the rear view mirror on, and when I'm smashing into the tire wall, sending tires everywhere.
I have a Gt755m with an i7 and cant play it un 1280x720

My fps is the same as it was before patch - in rallying at least - but as soon as I enter rallycross it drops significantly. It is the fault of the AI cars. :)

An option to lower the AI cars detail would help. The RX tracks also seem to be poorly optimized; hitting tyrewalls or touching grass lowers the fps a lot. Codemasters are aware of it and working on it though.
Do you know if it is your CPU or your GPU that is the bottleneck?
Definitely the CPU - AMD Athlon II x2 @ 3.00 GHz.

Very good job Codies, looks very realistic in terms of atmosphere and car behaviour.

However I noticed that cars are going too fast. For instance:

- Lydden Hills: 40.3 in game (and could certainly go below) vs 41.9 in real this year (dry conditions / Solberg's hotlap)

- Holjes : 40.5 in game (once again could certainly go below) vs 42.9 in real this year (dry / Solberg again).

Looks like there is too much grip (lateral and reaccel grip), too much power (i.e. HP are focused on the low RPM range spectrum in real). This video is quite interesting in that respect: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x20ymia_wrx-team-peugeot-hansen-holjes-sweden-on-board-lap-5-12_auto

Lateral grip is clearly trickier in real. Some adjustments to catch up real lap times would be better for an even more realistic handling. 2 to 3 seconds for a 1 km track is really too much IMO

As far as I know the team are aware of this discrepancy. Now, that the RX update is out they'll be able to read player feedback and potentially in the future do another pass on settings.

The problem with the virtual tracks is that simulating grip on tarmac with dirt dragged onto it is very difficult. In real life the drivers are likely to cut the corners less to preserve cars and avoid damage. I agree with you that the gap is a bit too big.

I can do low/mid 38s at Holjes without deep cuts, when the fastest real life times were high 42s.

It would be interesting to hear from the devs what is the main reason for the cars in the game being quite a bit quicker and whether there are plans to tweak it, without taking away this great feeling with the cars we have now.

The AI cars have already lost a ton of detail - the entire interior. That's why they have solid black windows.
An option to get it back would actually be nice for those that have the grunt and like to take screenshots/videos.
I upped the resolution to Ultra + 8x MSAA and 2560x1440 (but NOT Advanced Blending) for the screenshots the FIA account retweeted (then downscaled the screenshots to 1080p. The things we do for nicer pics... well, except that bloody motion blur. Codies, please, ANY kind of blur/motion blur should be something we can toggle in graphics options. Not only does turning it off give a small performance boost, it is a bane of those that take screenshots).

Rally Cross also really highlights the downside to having a single generic driver texture.
Ideally, the driver/co-driver textures would be part of the PSSG for each car skin, then you could have unique driver overalls for each car, like in Codies F1 games. We have the HDD space to add a few extra hundred megabytes.

I'm only running an Intel i7 3.6Ghz with a GTX780Ti and 16gb RAM, so not cutting edge. Not using an SSD either.

- I'm not convinced the leaderboard rankings shown in game are correct... Either lots of people are cutting somewhere or I'm that much slower. I felt I had good pace, but couldn't get near top 30-50. Even @ji1 couldn't...
Also, the leaderboards for e.g. full circuit at Lydden Hill should be separate for 4 and 6 lap races. Without having access to a full leaderboard it's difficult to know what is going, but those rankings and times just don't seem right
It's different. Very different. I think it's safe to say that your experience in the Rally modes isn't going to guarantee you're instantly on top in RX.
With the design of the RX tracks and them being so short, a lot more people will be throwing caution to the wind.
Going absolutely flat out and not binning it.
Plus generous cutting, which is how I beat you by 3 seconds on one of the Lydden Hill circuits.
But even normally, I'm a hell of a lot closer to you than in Rally.

The AI overall times are the same but  the fastest laps are different
will there be fix for this?

I tested it on the Holjes Junior Circuit last night. Turns out it's a leaderboard for overall race times regardless of how many laps you do. I did 2 laps and went straight to number one, where as before I did the 4 lap heats in championship and I was around 30-50th

Ah I see! It makes sense now - I think I've seen one of my friends have an unbelievably quick time, but now it's clear it was from a shorter race.

Having leaderboards in RX is nice, but the race times are so dependent on AI that it may not show much. For now it probably does as beating AI is rather easy, but in the future it would be nice to have leaderboards for race times with the same race distance. Or, a leaderboard for best lap time.

In any case RX is more about the on-track action and we'll test that pretty soon in PvP :)

Ok, so i've only just got round to doing the full Holjes circuit, and wow I love it already! I can't wait for the PvP to fully launch, hoping for some nice clean competitive races with everyone.

I can double-check tonight, but I'm running the game on medium settings, with the addition of medium shaders, low anisotropic filtering, skidmarks on, advanced fog on, and I can't remember what else, but it's basically everything that medium leaves off is now on/low, except advanced ambient occlusion and blending, which remain off. 1366x768, CMAA, and no vsync. Framerate is anywhere between 30-60, which has been typical so far (except for the more tree-y parts of Monte Carlo, and only Monte Carlo, when it dips to 23).

Specs are i5-4570S, GT 750M, Windows 8.1 (Bootcamped late 2013 21.5" iMac).

FWIW, my graphics and audio settings (but not preferences or controller bindings) were reset to default after the update.

I was just reading on /r/dirtgame that some people are experiencing poor performance in rally and hillclimb with v0.6, so I'll check that out tonight too.

I had way more fun with the RX stuff than I was expecting. The cars feel spot on to me, and racing door to door is a blast.

I just have to stop this bad habit I have of punting the other cars off the track before the PvP support comes in!

Well, that's not exactly midrange either :D

I wish they would add a test/practice mode for both RX and rally stages. An RX open practice mode with other AI cars on the same session a la RFactor/gtr 2 would be really cool.

I have 3 problems with the new RX update:
1. Major FPS loss, aspecially  in Sweden.
2. I did the RX championship today and lost the sound completely except the upshifts and downshift, all other sound was gone and this happened 3 times today...
3. My rear view mirror is not showing even though I enabled it in HUD.

I have to say this update is great and really enjoying it!

I see people setting AI levels and can not find this option in the menus, where should I be looking? I'm looking for the career races.

Fixed a bit my fps loss when playing by restarting the game when the fps are decreasing a lot, the game starts with 70-80fps and after some races decrease to 30-40fps and starts to stutter, i alt+f4 and start dirt again, only in rx is the problem

Not just yet, but that's what it'll be considered fairly soon. Either high mid-range or low high-range.
It's certainly not a super overclocked K version of an Intel i7 CPU and a whole series of GeForce cards has come and gone since.
It's definitely not using a Titan X and there's no SLI going on. =P
But I can still push the graphics up there, so it's not just about optimisation.
PCs that have gone a couple of years without any upgrades will hit their limits with new games eventually.

I am not seeing any problems in RX as far as FPS goes, all settings max including 8x AA, at 2560x1440, only option off is advanced blending.
I am running a substantial rig though:

Corsair AX1200 PSU
3770K @ 4.5GHZ
Gigabyte Titan X 1400/8000
Samsung 830 256gb SSD
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP7 Motherboard
Corsair Dominator 16GB 2133mhz ram
Win 7 64 bit
Acer XB270HU 27"

I am really disliking the motion blur though, it is terrible.

Codies, PLEASE give us an option to turn off the motion blur.
