are steering wheels necessary in f1 2015?

Recommended Posts

hi Im considering investment in f1 2015 and I was wondering if a steering wheel is a necessity because im not Keane on investing £40 to enjoy a game I have already brought I last played an f1 game about 10 years ago with a controller but with lots of assists as I was still very young so if anyone out there has played with a controller it would be appreciated if you could tell me what it is like.

Pad is easier but a wheel is alot more fun. If its just F1 you play then the wheel sucks atm so dont buy one just for this game.

It's this game that makes a wheel sucks when compared to a pad. Racing games are all better with a wheel, but CM f1 games of course.

Definitely no need to invest a wheel if you don't want to. Most cross-platform racing games sell best on console, and only a tiny percentage of console owners have a wheel. So the publishers have to make them work well with a controller.

I've got the thrustmaster T300 with F1 rim and ps4 and the game plays well, if racing games are your thing the wheel is the only way.

Realism - Wheel
Fun - Wheel
Longevity - Wheel
Competitivness - Pad (unfortunately)

Wheel all the way IMO.

In anticipation of the games release around 6 weeks back I prepared my self with investing in a wheel and a semi sim rig as I wanted to really enjoy F1 with a wheel on my PS4.

After looking around within budget I bought a thrustmaster T100 which ticked most boxes for my ps4 and was on the codemasters supported wheel list.

So on F1 release day I hooked my wheel up and at first it was blooming awful force feedback and steering input all over the place. Tried to alter some of the wheel settings but couldn't get it right.

Getting it working properly was hard work and very frustrating. I even made a help thread on here which someone gave me settings to try which did help but I felt it was never perfect.

Out of interest I compared my times to the DS4 and was shocked how faster and easier it was with a controller.

I have now sold my rig and wheel as I feel it was a big disadvantage over the DS4.

Whilst I did sometimes enjoy racing F1 with the wheel, I just couldn't get it to respond to its full potential and as my PS4 is not in a games room it was too much hassle to keep setting up the rig and wheel in my front room every time. Hence its quicker and easier to just use the controller from my own experience.

I would love to try a wheel again on a better rig and maybe the T300 wheel which I believe is a better wheel that is mostly recommended.

But for now at least the controller is fairly good, would be better to have rumble on the throttle though when losing grip (TC off)
