Any GTX 970 owners?

Recommended Posts

My previous card was a 7970 & updated the bios to the 7970GHz edition(same spec as the 280x). I do not own a 970, but own a 980Ti.

When DiRT Rally was on early access I had the 7970 running & I had no issue running the game on high. I had no stutter in any of the events. Maybe your CPU is too weak or maybe some PSU combo that cripple the performance. Racing games use more CPU processing than other genre in most case & you can get major drop in performance when the power supply is too weak which also can do permanent damage to the whole system. My PC currently setup gulp around ~900W from the wall when both GPU & CPU are loaded at 100%.

I do not recommend to upgrade to a 970, because you'll end up very quick with a similar issue. The reason is simple. you're upgrading a high end card to a mid end one.

Even though you get better performance out of the 970 the fillrate value is lower with higher shader one. When you bump up the resolution & leave on medium setting, high end card still keep up due to raw power, but mid end card cripple very fast.

Upgrading to a 980, 980ti, Fury & Fury X will make more sense to me. At worst wait if you think it is too expensive.

EDIT:
TIPs: drop the shadow detail to medium. Shadow is heavy on the GPU & also it's not very noticeable between high & medium.

(I just noticed the thread started in September...)

at a res of 1080 the 970 gtx monsters dirt rally. i benchmarked it in dirt rally avg is about 90fps upto 120 ish.

there is a good deal at overclockers on the amd 390 nitro card if you not bothered about amd vs nvidia https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapphire-radeon-r9-nitro-390-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-with-backplate-11244-01-20g-gx-373-sp.html

i did list other cards previously somewhere on here. at end of day its all about money and your budget. we can all say get the next card up and up and so on. if your budget doesnt meet that then its no good.

970 gtx amd 390 will be good for 2 years minimum yet even at high graphics at 1080.more likely 3 years.

Looking at Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider... 1 year and you'll be running at medium to high to match 60FPS. 3 years and lowest settings may be not enough to keep you at 60FPS on 1080p.

I gave the lad £350 for the whole PC and £50 for the monitor  :D

I don't see a big deal between ultra & medium. Technically I don't see any reason for the game to drop under 60fps even with a 280x.
