Lets be realistic about adding new content

Recommended Posts

Taking a stroll through the suggestion box brings up a lot of repetitive posts, New Zealand, random cars, other various tracks, 1 track from every country in the world. While I understand that more content is always good, and I do love my content, people need to understand that just because you own a Toyota Yaris doesn't mean it'll be put in the game. I would love CM to add in New Zealand, or any other new tracks, but they already have a planned list of cars and tracks to make and release that they came up with months, if not years ago. That being said, people should tone it down on the 250 thousand posts about random cars they can't license (Toyota) and new tracks that they demand immediately. Licensing cars is expensive in itself, not to mention all the research and testing that goes into putting it in game. New tracks tend to take 3-6 months of information gathering alone, this comes at a high cost. You have to travel out, take millions of pictures (barely an exaggeration) of the track surface, environment, buildings, signs, posts, texture gathering, laser scan the track,  and then it goes to the art team to develop, over another long period of time to put all their wonderful magic in the details. I'm not saying that suggesting more content is a bad idea, but people seem upset that these things haven't already happened yet. I think it would be best for people to focus more on gameplay and features, bug fixing, getting the game to feel right, things that are all more easily achieved without spending millions of dollars on something that would take months to finish.
Now, all that being said, as far as future content goes, I think CM should go ahead with their current plan, since they will anyways, and at the end of development hold a poll for a location or two and for the fans top 5 cars. I also feel like maybe Early Access backers would be able to test and help improve those cars and tracks before they officially launch, like the Community Test Environment for Battlefield 4.

I agree here. It is already amazing at what speed content is being currently added. I´m quite sure all content packs that have been announced so far have already been worked on simultaneously, and to organize, plan and execute that really is a daunting task. However, I do really really hope that the Early Access stage is enlengthened past november 2015 so that more locations can be added before the official release - even if it takes another year. The game looks great, so I´m pretty sure it´ll be considered a worthy buy even if it is released in 2016.

The current plans so far, as long as I can remember go at least into December, so full release could be sometime next summer or so. I would only want Early Access to be lengthened if it really needs it, if they get their planned content out and all nice and patched and shiny, ready for release, then I say release it and add a Fan Favorites DLC with a track and some cars afterwards. I am a big Battlefield fan, and their Community Test Environment does it right. People get to play and give feedback on new DLC and patches/updates before it goes live. They are also creating a community map to be released free to everyone still playing the game, and I think that's what CM should do. Give the Early Access backers a bit more bang for their buck to continuously test new features  and maps before release, maybe even offer the DLC free to backers.

I also agree and in fact, it would take a decade to add all features and tracks into the SIM - but as the name "Suggestion box" clearly tells: It's a Suggestion !
Made by different people with different demands on the Sim.
So Codies can just pick out the most overlapping threads / requests and can implement things , as far as its realistic to get it done. Fan support has been great so far and Im pretty sure they'll move on that way - which makes DR so special for me.

Agreed, the suggestion box is just that, but I think CM knows that people want New Zealand, better FFB, more damage and every car and their mothers. That's why I think they should do the poll. There's just easier features and gameplay mechanics to fix before adding content. The best way to make a game is to get gameplay 100% down, then add all the content you want. What's even more, people keep posting about problems they've already said they'll look into. I don't understand however why they haven't made a full gravel Pikes Peak and allowing all the cars. That should be fairly simple, and they said they would do it a few months and major updates ago.

Actually we are going to have a full gravel Pikes Peak, Kick Up teased about it here:

As for the topic subject, I agree of what has been said, the game should continue with what's planned for it, fixing bugs and make other improvements along the way. Then after all this, they could add in some community proposed content by making a survey or such, as DLC or part of the game before it is complete.

And don't forget some of us paid for 10+ CM titles in the past, buying them on CD in old times so we I expect more than that.

Sure they will leave a lot of stuff for the next Dirt Rally II and III to sell it again for 70+ dolls

Yeah i did too, so what? How many hours of enjoyment did you get out of these 10+ CM titles? Thats what you pay for, nothing else

Completely irrelevant imho

i think what many games developers miss is one solid game done well can still do better than a small game with lots of different dlc content.

this effects many games now. yet if you look at classic well made games they sold gazillion copies because they were well made and had all content in.

i think to just keep to dirt rally and just keep adding content keep price same could work really well.

there are many areas which would make this awesome game just the best ever. the thing is as a business you need to make money.

hillclimb europe with many of the cars we rally with is massive yet we get pikes peak. that is a missed opportunity. so could add euro hillclimb tracks and cars.

mp rally is the biggest missing thing. that alone would bring so many to the game.

adding other well known events.

in short this game could be worked on and developed for years and just keep being added to instead of giving just enough and wait for next game next year.

im happy with what i have now but i hope this project can be made even bigger and added to .

"Early Access" game isn't even finished & people are already trying to stifle community input, even when the game's creators started an entire "Suggestion Box" sub-forum for feedback?

Better to make any & all suggestions before launch and see what bubbles up to the top in popularity & priority than to wait until after release when updates are limited to what's patch-able post-launch. Isn't that the whole point of "Early Access?"

The point of early access is to allow the public to buy unfinished games of course.

Nah, that's what retail launch is for now.  :)

I simply stated that there's no time for adding new content in their already tightly squeezed timeframe. I'm just suggesting we hold off on asking for more content until it's actually feasible. No stifling involved.

Yeah, but when is it actually happening? They said they'd do it months ago, and unless they're completely changing the map to like pre 1970's era or something, they just need to switch the tarmac to dirt/gravel and change the textures, shouldn't take more than one guy a few hours.

I just hope they don't go $70+, it's a big detractor. I won't buy iRacing or RFactor because one of them is subscription based, and the other I just don't like.

A gravel version has not been confirmed, Paul wishes for it to be included but it's not up to him.
