Recommended Posts

I have posted a 'new topic'  "overheating cured?" and hope this may be of some help.

Sorry if I should have posted here

I tested earlier and it is even more visible in heavy rain conditions. Even short shifting with no car near me the engine was overheating.
Its something to do with the rear wheel slip. Overheating mainly happens exiting slower corners and like you say in heavy rain conditions. Its why tracks like China are so bad for it. The long slow corners where you are fighting traction are causing the rear wheels to spin and then overheating the engine. This is magnified by 200% when you are following another car :(

That does tally with what I saw when testing this. Wheel spin overheats the engine very quickly, just to confirm this could someone who is seeing the issue try putting Traction Control on Full and see if it goes away please. I would be interested to get your opinion on this.

@Lozzy That might explain why it seems even more noticeable in heavy rain conditions sometimes. I did a 5 lap race at Monza in heavy rain conditions and the engine was glowing red constantly from lap 1, even after over-doing the short shifting for two laps. I's also very noticeable at the long bend in China before the long DRS straight, it happens there every lap in the race. Singapore is another good example: My engine was overheating during the whole race, making it impossible to pass another car especially since I was driving a Renault engine.

I'll do the traction control test later today and let you know what I found.

I will try running with traction on and see what happens. It did seem worse through corners tho, on straights in the wet the engine temp went down slightly so it does make sense that it may be traction related.

As the issue has only come up since patch 1.04 I think it was, is it not possible to look at what was changed during that update that could cause this to happen? Trace back what was changed to the cause?

In the initial version of the game the overheating issue was there as well but in a different way. The car used to overheat in Rich fuel mix costing laptime. I think I did a test qualifying at Silverstone where you could only run half the lap in Rich before the car would overheat and lose performance.

Now like you said they released a patch at some point that was supposed to fix that issue. In a way it did. You can run rich fuel mix in a dry qualifying in clear air without many issues. The issues start to come when your either in traffic, which causes the engine to overheat very fast or your on a wet track or struggling to control the rears due to tyre wear. Some engines are better or worse at controlling the temperature. The Renault is bad and I also did a race at Singapore with the Honda where the engine basically stayed red the whole race.

Putting traction control on might help prevent the wet weather and traction related engine overheating but I doubt it will fix the overheating that comes from following another car. I think that issue might need a separate fix.

@Lozzy I just did the Traction Control test, and unfortunately, it doesn't make any difference at all.

I did a 5 lap quick race on Monza, in heavy rain conditions, as Fernando Alonso and below are the results. I was running standard fuel mix on every occasion:

- No assists: Engine glowing red from about turn 2 onwards, only cooling down to yellowish on the straights.
- TC on: No difference, glowing red enginge
- Auto gears: No difference, glowing red engine

Now here's the strange part: On one occasion I accidentally knocked a piece of the front wing off in T1 and.. the engine didn't overheat after that. I'll try this again, it may be worth looking into. If you want to reproduce this, I recommend trying Monza in the rain, it's very very noticeable in these conditions on that track.

EDIT: I just retried the wing damage thing, and this time the engine did overheat just as much so it was just a one-off.

I've reproduced the issue and given a bug to the handling guys to investigate. I'll update you as I get any relevant information.
