[PC] Excessive hard-disk usage by texture streaming

Recommended Posts

  • A detailed description of the issue. Texture streaming causes hard-disk to continuously read at high speeds

  • Platform? PC Windows
  • Game-mode? Offline modes (not tried online)
  • [PC ONLY] Please post your DXDiag, including the make and model of motherboard. Attached
  • What troubleshooting have you tried? Please list everything you tried. Reduced texture streaming to very low
  • Any screenshots or video of the issue? Remember to add as unlisted if video via a third party. (View below)
  • How do you make the problem happen? Please add a step-by-step guide here so we can replicate and get reported as quick as possible. Playing with texture streaming at low/medium/high/very high level

I just bought F1 2021 for PC, it took me a few days to download it (I preferred the old multi-DVD version...) however I noticed a problem with the texture streaming.
I play with everything set to High graphical quality (but with Ray Tracing disabled), but I noticed an high hard-disk usage during gameplay. So I ran some tests changing the texture streaming settings and checking the disk usage with Windows Resource Monitor. I made some laps in both Time Trial and Race mode.

< Please note on the graphics F1 2021 is the orange line >

Very low
The disk usage here is with peaks of less than 10 MB/sec on time trial and ~16 MB/sec on race, for me it's quite good however textures are blurry.

Low
On time trial disk usage reaches peaks of 60 MB/sec and is always at more than 50 MB/sec, while in race there are peaks of almost 100 MB/sec.

Medium
Time trial usage is between 30-60 MB/sec, in race is lower but some peaks are over 100 MB/sec.

High
In time trial the disk usage is always at +50 MB/sec, with some peaks of 90 MB/sec. Race is similar to Medium.

Very high
And this is the strange thing: with Very high texture streaming, the hard disk usage is LOWER (peaks of only 30 MB/sec in time trial and race) than High. However, the game crashes after few seconds. This happened to me three times in a row, I cannot even reach the first corner in Australia that the game crashes without any error message.

With F1 2020 there was no problem with texture streaming (which I used at High level) and the hard-disk usage was normal.

I have two SSDs on my computer, F1 2021 is installed on drive D while Steam in on drive C, don't know if this is somewhat connected to the problem. However it's not nice to play with the hard-disk light almost always flashing on my PC (meaning the hard disk is busy), and having the disk continuosly read dozens of MB per second could damage it. 😐

Ok, so I changed the settings you said, but the problem is still happening.

These are my in-game graphical settings:

Also, if I put Texture Streaming to Medium/High/Very high, the game crashes to desktop without any error message (no EGO Dumper window appears) during track loading (and also if I switch Texture Streaming during gameplay). Using Low Texture the game works (and looks) fine, except of course for the excessive hard-disk usage (with 100+ MB/s peaks). 😐

Regarding the crash to desktop, I found little information on Windows Event Viewer:

The information translated is: "An error has occured -1023 (0xfffffc01) during opening of log file".

The firmwares are up-to-date.✔️

I moved the game to C but, as you can see, the disk usage with Medium texture streaming is still excessive (lower peaks are when the game is in pause).

In this test I was running a time trial at Zandvoort, but the game keep crashing while loading races. "Luckily", this time EGO Dumper managed to create an error report file, which is attached.

Everything is fine only if I set texture streaming to Very low. (However the intro videos stutter for about 15-20 seconds at start of the game)

I didn't understand the part about "swap partition", could you explain how to check this?🤨

Page file. Swap 'partition' isn't a good word. What drive is it located on please? (C or D)

Not sure if having the game on the second drive would actually change the amount of writes to the primary in any way (assuming the page file hasn't been changed from the default of system drive and automatically managed).

But the disk activity light on the drive could be misleading, AFAIK it detects activity (Read and Write).

Lettura and Scrittura I think mean Read and Write and I only see high numbers on Lettura (Read) it would only be writes that 'age' your SSD and they are measured in TBW - Magician will give you this figure, IIRC. I'd expect the game to fetch the textures from somewhere 🙂 The 1050Ti only indicates 4GB dedicated memory so I'd expect it to read data in often compared to the recommended cards that generally have 6GB and up. These usage charts indicate that the game is using more VRAM this time around and why you might not have seen this behaviour before.

Paging file was completely disabled on my PC, I activated it on both my hard-drives but nothing changes. 😐

It's annoying to see the light continuosly flashing during gameplay, even if my computer satisfies all the minimum requirements.

I have other games installed (Project Cars 3, rFactor 2, PES 2021, Snowrunner) I play all of them at almost maximum settings and this problem simply doesn't exist. But I remember a similar problem with F1 2020 when, in the first days, I was unable to play offline because the game ran at only 9-10 FPS and then a patch fixed this, so I hope Codemasters could "fix" it 🙂 or I will have to play with low texture streaming (and low quality textures, of course)... 😞

It's really not hurting your drive. Magician will show your wear rate by TBW (860EVO guarantee is 600 TBW) and (870QVO guarantee is 2880 TBW) more concerning is the QLC construction of the 870 which means that massive chunks of write data have to occur, so it's apples and oranges.
