Audio / SoundFX discussion

Recommended Posts

From what I understand there are 3 things that work off one another, the cars engine and mechanical, the physics/tire model/suspension, and sound.

The engine model probably works from some of the reactions to the physics model (load on hills etc) and engine of course will change the physics.  The sound is last so it receives all of its input from the engine and physics model.  If the engine model says there is antilag, then the sound puts out antilag sounds, if the tires dig into gravel, then the sound outputs gravel hitting fenders and so on.

It it seems like a logical flow, that ends up very complicated with all the variations.

So if we are not hearing some things then it may very well be linked to the engine model.

I wonder if there's a list what cars have their correct audio?

Impreza gr. A
Audi quattro? (Sounds correct to my ears)
306 maxi f2 kit-car (if my memory serves me correct)
What others?

I think a lot of the cars have accurate sounds, certainly a lot if not all of the older cars seem to have real recorded audio.

I think it's about 3 quarters are genuine, and most are real recorded, even if they're not from the right car.

From what I know the 2001 Focus is accurate but the recording itself is quite old. Not sure if it's me seeing things, but I could swear I saw someone post something about Codies getting a '01 Focus RS WRC for a recording session.

On a very side note, I noticed that my game audio at full volume is about 1/3 of any other audio on my PC. Anyone else get that?

Assuming all your settings are right, it's not quite that.

The game actually has a fairly high dynamic range, it's not normal for regular production stuff, but it means there is far more detail in the sound, however you need to have your volume higher in order to pick up the quieter sounds.

eh. I'm assuming the engine and co driver should be the loudest, and they're rather quiet. I'm just noting since the other night I turned on Pandora and noticed it's way louder.

Well, the updated sound for the Evo is much better than the old one, but the Anti-Lag-System is still not banging when slowing down, approaching a corner. When I'm playing with the throttle in engine idle, the ALS sounds quite well, but in normal rallying it's simply inaudible!

That's because it's using a system that was never designed to play as ALS. It currently requires you to be completely off throttle before it kicks in. The whole system needs reworking and I can't see that happening any time soon.

The car audio is immersive and realistic, but I think the backfire sounds in replay should have distinct pops and/or bangs on up shifts, more or less on certain cars. These sounds should have a brighter environmental reverb , especially in the distance.

@cmsoundfx For what you did to Quattro S1, I want to have your babies. The sound is so good and epic it's beyond words :D

Probably if not the most iconic sound, then at least one of the most iconic sounds in the entire rally history. You've made this game just that bit more complete with this addition.

Just get into the game and see for yourself. You'll notice it immediately.

Loving the reverb in replay , just hope the back fires can be cranked up a bit , echoing off the trees / mountainside .  It would sound so much more dramatic , especially way in the distance.   !

Question: has there been update for Lancia Stratos? It sounds more fierce and the sound nicely distorts in replays (wales stages) compared to what i remember before.

It is either that or i have found my personal golden zone for audio settings

Not a lot to change for audio settings. Don't personally have any old Stratos footage, but I'm sure you could find and compare on YT.

True, not much, but it seems that setting dynamics to low, probably kicks in a compressor that might make small things more noticable. I also use headphones eq curve from game, but it is more subtle effect (probably it boost low and high end little bit).

To my ears though, it sounds more like it has had an engine and exhaust sound update, but i need to compare to older videos from YT like you suggested. I was just wondering if anybode else had noticed this same thing
