Audio sound for next F1 2016

Recommended Posts

Take a look at this Youtube video...  ( "#DRIVECLUB BIKES / Evo Developer low-down / #PlaystationPGW" ) showing what "Evolution Studios" did to make realistic audio sounds for their new game "Driveclub Bikes". Go to one minute forty five seconds to get the low down nitty gritty. I'm saying this is what Codemasters should have done for the audio sound of the F1 cars. The sound is essential for realism and atmosphere.

We have placed microphones on F1 cars for recording of engine and other mechanical noises while driving (turbo etc). I would say the engines this year sound the best they ever have, we certainly spent a lot of time comparing what we have in game to real F1 footage early in the season.

people don't realize the sound of the car on tv onboards isn't what the cars sound like. Its what they sound like with sound effects removing wind noise and microphones that filters out windnoise.Giving them a midrange deadpan sound to them.As you hear in the track microphone they actually have much more treble sound to them.

@Lozzy I really like the sound this year! I love the aggressive off-throttle sounds of the Renault engine, but I have to say, the Mercedes engine's too quiet for my liking, especially on downshifts. This is making me not want to drive any Mercedes-powered cars in this game, because I feel the Ferraris and Renaults sound so much better. I also think the 'fly by' sounds are very good, they got that sweeping 'woosh' in the wind sound spot on.

The flyby replay sounds have nice swoosh sounds, but cars lack the exhaust note and turbo sound.   Onboards are much more accurate now, but need a more violent downshift sound and increased turbo noise.

Overall game needs a more tense and sinister atmosphere during actual racing.

Fair point for this year but to actually record all those lines for each team would be a logistical nightmare and wouldn't be a good way to spend our time and effort in my humble opinion. We could try adding a filter for each team but that wouldn't change it much I wouldn't think.

You can never please everyone, if you record the direct engines sound someone will say it is different from TV, if you give us a identical engines sound from TV, someone will say it doesnt sounds as a real F1 car.

To solve all of this
complaints, the better way is make a "almost-full" customizable game, for example, record the real engines sound, give it a mixing to sounds like TV engine and add one option to choose which sound we want.

Something like that will take a long time to do, but you'll avoid all criticisms about personal preferences

I don't think people are really complaining about sound. It just took time to get used to how awful the cars sound irl.   From my experience and from what I've read the biggest complaint in the sound department was the race engineers voice coming from the ds4 is too soft.  I like playing my F1 games loud and the engineers voice gets drowned out.

I think it's reasonable to say this years game onboards are more or less true to what we hear on TV, as CM actually recorded samples from the real life cars. So, imo , their recordings, sound similar, more or less for different manufactures, to what is broadcast on TV.    CM should work on the downshift distinct sound, ERS grumbling sounds, turbo noises (i realize it can be annoying for some sim drivers, maybe not too loud) , and exterior replay sound with a meatier and louder exhaust note.   Some sound modders in other sims do pretty good in this area.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVT3A91u0LQ    -this mod has the elements of what should be heard in F1 2015 game.

But, as far as downshift sounds, I would rather it stays like it is, rather than they tweak and ending up having it sounding like barking seals again like 2010   : )

@Flyby I think the downshift/off throttle sounds for Red Bull and Toro Rosso are great but the other cars sound soft and weak for some reason. For the next game I'd like the other engines to sound more like the renault engines in this years game

Regarding replay sounds, I know many don't really care , but just noticed that during certain camera angles, cars passing by in replay tend to sound like meowing cats. That's the best way to describe the sound. I do like the direction of the swoosh, but would hope for a more real life representation of the cars engine / exhaust note., with the fluttering ERS sound.

There are a couple games that are also capturing on the oncoming directional sound of a car intake and as well as the rear /exhaust sound aspect as the car travels past. These little points of attention to details have been used in pcaras, AC and soon R3E.   I don't know if CM has looked into this detail?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcCzge_I2zo
Video gives an idea in the example of ERS flutter on replay.

F1 2015 sounds are good and I like it.

I have idea from other game and other gendre. In Battlefield -games there is possibility to change which kind of audio you want. Other audios are "cleaned", but there is option called War Tapes. War Tapes are RAW audio data from guns, jets, tanks etc and it makes huge difference for playing.

@Lozzy I love read about these things. Possible that you made some kind of making off video or blog?

Youtube video one - "Hamilton vs rosberg onboard view F1 GP Full Race Brazil Sao Paulo"

Youtube video two - "Codematsers F1 2015 - Silverstone - McLaren - No Assits. Qualifying and Race."

And yet the engine-sound on your cars still sound nothing like the real thing from the TV footage! So if you reckon you spent a lot of time on it then you need to get a new sound-recording engineer who knows what the hell he's doing!

The first day i got this game immediately I noticed the flat overly-muted midrange tone on your engines, it sounds terrible! How do you expect us to play this and feel atmosphere? The people who come in here and say "Oh, it sounds great" are just morons with super speakers turned-up loud. I'm a music producer, let me tell you... ANYTHING SOUNDS GOOD UP LOUD, my fart sounds good when it's loud, CAPICHE! The test is when the volume is on normal tv speakers and only at medium volume level, then if it sounds convincing and realistic in that scenario, medium to low volume coming from only built-in TV speakers, then you know you've nailed it. The fact that i had to explain that to you is astonishing. C'mon guys, F1 game players, starting chiming in and getting real and tell Codemasters what i'm sayin, how do you expect them to make changes if you keep coming in here like mentally retarded babies saying "oh, suck suck, it sounds so niiiiiice". Fu_king speak-up people and stop talking sh_t!

I took this game back the day after it came out, and i don't have it any more. But i'm getting my comments in now so Codemasters will wake-up to themselves and get this sh_t fixed for F1 2016, if you fu_k that one up I'M FINISHED WITH CODEMASTERS, GAME OVER! I PROMISE YOU? And i will crucify you in the forums, i'll make it my personal vendetta to carefully word all my forum posts to make it seem legit and avoid dopehead flamers blah blahing. Codemasters have the license, but i don't have a decent F1 racing game to play, and haven't had for 6 years, because you keep fu_king this shit up, understand?,

Regardless of what you say i'm not happy with your denials, that's all they are, denials. The sound of the engines in your game suck! You need to go back to the old sound before this muted engine debacle or at least give us an option next time.

Everyone go and watch the videos at Youtube and compare the two, then tell me which one sounds utterly pathetic and which one sounds LIKE WHAT WE WOULD EXPECT A N F1 CAR ENGINE TO SOUND LIKE, game or no game, muted new engine or otherwise. Come back and tell us after watching the videos which sound you want, and have a laugh for me too when you get to the Codemasters game footage.

Codemasters say it would be a logistical nightmare to provide a different voice for each team race engineer. You people are kidding us right?

My God in heaven, who are we dealing with here?
Read the following from the lady who did the voice work for Bethesda in their latest game... "Speaking in an interview with IGN, Taylor the female voice-actor for the latest fallout 4 said that 13,000 lines of speech from her were recorded and made it into the game. Elsewhere in the interview, she likened the attention to detail she saw from Bethesda the same as that of Disney Pixar when she also did work for them."

13,000 lines of speech people, and Codemasters would have you players believe it "would be a logistical nightmare" for 8 different voices in game? ROFL. Yep, now i know who were dealing with here...

Geez, tell us how you really feel mbot  LOL.
I agree that an F1 game should have its audio design prioritized, because the F1 atmosphere is (used to be about the noise) .  That means if a race car has turbo chargers, ERS noises,  then these sounds should be included in the audio.  Otherwise it's like selling me Andrea Bocelli tickets only to get to the concert and end up with Gomer Pyle.  :)

I realize recording samples from cars and then using them to replicate into a video game is not easy, and I think 2015 has come a long way, but, there has to be audio designers that have an "ear "artistically to do it (R3E audio guy comes to mind). So, it's about the sound tech / engineer having an artistic abilities as well, and I imagine they are hard to come by.

edit: In my opinion, the onboard engine overall "voice" signature of each car is pretty good. I think they will get it closer and with added peripheral engine sounds it would be even more accurate.

guy,you wrote that whole rant and its just completely wrong.Read very carefully. The sound you here on the onboards on tv is captured with microphones that filter out wind noise for tv broadcasts.Thats what giving them, and every other racing car on tv for that matter, a mid range dead pan sound to them.Thats not,I repeat,Thats not what a f1 car sounds like.Thats why it sounds different from codies. You look like a dam fool taking a stance on it should sound like tv when the sound on tv isn't what they really sound like.Know what your talking about before going on a big long rant about something.

Engine sound might change (a little bit) next year, due to the new waste gate rules: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/121332

Please make sure you get these right.

Edit - Btw. Would be nice to have an option for V10 or V8 sound :D Would be a nice easter egg. I hate the V6 sound.

My biggest gripe in this department is, that
the engine sounds (onboard and replay) are way to low
and the audio sliders do not work, in order to adjust the volume on your own.

In consequence race starts are awful, as racing in the pack the sound of the other cars drown the sound of your own car.

I'm on PS4 and have raised this several times, a gamebraking issue for me...

Any time you suddenly need 10x your expected budget on any given area it's a logistical nightmare. The engineer has many thousands of lines himself, and we record in more languages than Bethesda. If we were going to invest such a huge extra amount into our VO, I'd want to get more out of it than just the same lines we already have 10 times.
