Race Engineer Suggestions for next year

Recommended Posts

just finished a race at brazil where i drove as nico rosberg in the championship season and i was 1 point ahead of raikkonen in the drivers championship and ferrari was 30 ahead of us in the constructors and with like 6 laps to go i take P1 and raikkonen and hamilton are battling and if we get a 1 - 2 here it will save our constructors hopes and as i was pushing for P1 i had -2 laps of fuel left, and the engineer calmly tells me to start saving fuel while im battling to take first and help us get the constructors championship in real life i would expect alot more intensity especially during the pit stops, here are some video clips of what i expect the engineer to be like in those intense situations where the championship could be one or very key late season races

this would add great immersion into the game, especially if career mode makes a return

That's just because Jeff is always so calm. He's ice cool, you know? There's no flustering him! :)

Being serious though: it's a good call. I'll look into it. I hadn't noticed before because I can never win the championship T_T

To be honest, this is something you wouldn't hear anymore in F1. All you hear today is: Save fuel, save tires, save engine.

Anyway, I would still like to have more realistic and informative team radios in the next game.

The engineer and being able to ask certain questions has been a great addition this year and I'm sure it will be expanded on for 2016.

I'd like to be able to ask for an update on a particular driver. Say Massa was just ahead of you in the championship you could ask for an update on him "Massa is currently in 6th. You would go ahead of him in the championship if it stays like this".

If recording multiple voices isnt feasible, at least have a couple of different voice actors. An Italian or French accent perhaps. Maybe we could select our engineer before the season.

And a bit more personal, eg Hamilton's in real life always says "OK Lewis......" Jeff never refers to you by name (although if career mode returns this wouldn't be needed)

yes, that would be awesome, and alot of sports games have names where you can pick your characters name so the commentator says, it'd be really cool if they we a large list of names you could pick from, so the engineer and commentators say your real life name if career mode does make a return, thats another way you could add much more immersion into career mode as some people just felt it as it said your name in the top left and nothing much after that, as you were basically they driver you just took over for

An engineer who tells "we can finish the race on this set but it will be tricky" instead of calling "pit in" every lap when I'm battling for first place on damaged options

I thought they listened to the "community" when they started making 15 and look where its at now, what makes you think there will be a sudden change for next year??

because if there isnt the game will die, 2016 will basically be the last year for codemasters to redeem themselves if not, give the game to another company to create

There was a bunch of stuff with the way the engineer logic and race strategy system interacted in '15 that led to some... unorthodox tactical calls from time to time. Both will be revised next year. We'll probably tone down the amount Jeff talks to you overall to some degree as well.

Those of you who were playing on release may remember the on-screen car status wasn't there at first, and not all platforms had the voice commands available to begin with. The engineer was set to give you a lot more detailed information about things to compensate for these facts. Now that the car status is back and the voice commands are working on all platforms, we can re-evaluate a little bit :)

Huh? We need MORE information from the pit engineer and not less. Obviously only useful information, I guess that is something you can't deliver.

The two aren't mutually exclusive :)

If we can drop/reduce the frequency of 5 lines like "You might want to adjust your brake bias back" (which I imagine a lot of you aere pretty sick of at this point) and replace it with one piece of useful data, then that's an improvement in two ways. Jeff interrupts you less, and it's more meaningful when he does.

Do you have any specific information in mind that you want to hear?

I think it'll be useful if Jeff could elaborate more on the car in front or behind. Ie vettel is 2 seconds behind, he pitted two laps ago and has the prime tyre fitted, we think he's on a 2 stop strategy and due to pit again in around 15 laps time.
Also if your on a 2 stop strategy Jeff could suggest changing to a 3 stop strategy because the lap times and tyre wear suggest that's the fastest way.
The engineers are there to look at strategy and suggest what the best strategy is, this also should carry on into the race as your situation changes so may the strategy

I like weather forecasts from the engineer to be somewhat inaccurate. Longer term forecasts that is! Like at the start of the race he could say 'there might be rain towards the end of the race' then it turns out there isn't. or vice versa.

There is always uncertainty in a weather forecast. Would you want a Back To The Future Doc Brown style it's going to stop raining in 17 seconds messages from the engineer?

He said he likes inaccurate forecasts and would like ours to be more inaccurate :)

I totally agree. But for that, there would have to have more of one IA's strategy. (this sentence sounds english ? :D )

Fair enough :)

Useful information are any information which helps me to make the best out of any situation. As @
DauntingConch already said, we need more relevant race and strategy information like in real life.
And you really should bring the race engineer more to life. I would prefer a style like Lewis' engineer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7ISApjkfPE

"Ok Lewis, we need to pull a gap, we need to pull a gap"
"Ok Lewis, we need some good lap times now"

Btw. Did you think about saving time and money by doing the engineer only in English but in a much better quality and with much more lines (or even 2 or 3 different voices)? I mean, who in the hell would use a German or French engineer? I am a German myself and I even change the language of my PS4 to get the engineer in English. It's ridiculous to have a German engineer when F1 is just English.

You could make subtitles for other languages if you're worried about localization, though.

@Tourgott Not sure I see where you're coming from regarding the 'quality' of the engineer; obviously a subjective thing but we tried to do it in the 'Bono' style and I think our actor did a really good job at it. I don't think lots more lines is probably necessary. Obviously some more lines will be needed in some areas, but we should be more focussed on replacing those that don't quite work with improvements.

"I mean, who in the hell would use a German or French engineer? I am a German myself and I even change the language of my PS4 to get the engineer in English. It's ridiculous to have a German engineer when F1 is just English. "

I see that - you are a very small sample size of Germans though. I expect a fair number would like to be spoken to in their own language :) Still, I do hear you on that and in F1 almost all engineers speak in English to their drivers. We're looking into an option to give you the choice between English engineer or [YOUR LANGUAGE] engineer. That'll be a nice choice if we can do it, I think.

It was possible in F1 2012 to change the engineer language.
Anyway, I really think you should do some research if people really want German/French/Spanish audio. Subtitles are the way to go in my opinion. It works for GTA and a lot of other games. Even Project Cars had only subtitles. I never heard anyone complaining.

As I said, I don't care, I switch to English anyway, but I think you could save money and time which you could invest in a better race engineer. It would be a nice touch if we would have an Italian accent for the Ferrari race engineer instead, e.g. Such little things would bring the game much more to life.

With the hud now available to all, maybe you could drop the advice to ease up on the corners to cool your tires and/or brakes. For the most part, it is inaccurate anyway. For instance at the first turn after just leaving the pits.

It would be a nice add.

IMO, the most epic thing that Jeff says is "Hi" when you return to pit lane hahahahahaha. Very very useful information.

@Britpoint The only thing that I really, really miss in the engineer's updates, is information about other driver's tyres. If i ask him about the driver in front/behind using voice command, I want to know if they're on options or primes and if they're fresh or worn, but he only tells you the driver's name, gap & fuel mix.. Not knowing what tyres/strategy the other cars are on can make your own strategy pretty hard to decide on sometimes.

Some other ideas that would be very welcome:
- 'Change race strategy' command (select + - laps to extend/shorten a stint, or maybe even change the amount of stops.

-Ask if you're still on the right tyres for the conditions when it starts to rain/get dry ( he does update you on this, but not always when it matters most )

- Ask where your team mate is in the race. I always like to know how he's doing.

i disagree, in 2016 and even right now, information about other drivers is banned, so i dont think it should be in the game imo

i think the engineer should provide more help with the strategy though, i hate having to drive flat out and decide my strategy when its the engineers job to do that and mine to focus on driving..
