[OFF TOPIC] Sebastien Loëb Rally EVO devs

I must admit I am curious to play the demo myself later today, even with all the negative impressions.

Another "interesting" thing happened. After that horrible experience, wanted to play DiRT to feel better again :D But when I launched DiRT, the wheel wasnt responding. The usual unplug-replug didn't help either. In the Windows Game Controlle config settings everything was fine and the wheel was detected there. I also tried with another game and the wheel wasn't detected there as well. The strangest part - after deleting SLRE demo from Steam, the wheel went back to normal
Yeah, I have noticed that SLRE open the logitech profiler by itself.

About the physics. terrible weight momentum and balance of the car. Try to do a scandinavian flick, It's impossible neither in Montecarlo nor the gravel playground.

After about 80 minutes it's gone and not coming back to my Steam library. I don't think DiRT Rally will have some serious competition anytime soon

Ok so I spent some time in the demo. It has a major flaw that WRC5 also suffers from. I'll quote my steam forum post.

This game as well as WRC5 do not integrate wheel support correctly. They essentially tacked on steering wheel support to a joystick steering method. On a normal controller joystick, you push the stick and there's a delay of your input so as to simulate a person taking the time to turn a steering wheel.

The problem is, when you use a steering wheel with this game, it STILL acts like a joystick and delays your inputs instead of being instant like it should be. Every input you make is delayed by approx. 300ms. As you may guess, that makes the game completely unplayable just like WRC5.
Quality-of-life wise, the camera reset to third person every race, and you cannot change binds or wheel settings unless you back out to the main menu. The menu is slightly laggy. You cannot hit escape on your keyboard to pause. The FPS was very low considering how easy the game should be to run and had some steep dips. The handbrake doesn't really work.

Physics wise, I couldn't get a great feel considering the input problems. To be honest, I only drove for a minute or two. It felt right in the middle of WRC5 and Dirt rally. The car was somewhat life-like but as good as Dirt Rally IMO.

I am sad:

1. No triple screen
2. No multipli devices support. I can't use my G27 pedals with my T300.

Wow, same issues they had in all their WRC games.  Guess I won't even attempt to torture myself with the demo as I have Clubsport pedals that are separate from my wheel.  Speaking of which, my CSW was flat-out not even supported for WRC 4, a Fanatec wheel which is one of the biggest wheel makers.. this company I swear...

It really is a shame because that Monte stage looks nice, it seems the environmental artists are the only competent employees at Milestone.  I could put up with the horrific sounds if the physics and FFB were good but that's not the case from videos I've seen.  I haven't tried it but you can visually see how bad the input lag is, it's embarassing no wonder Loeb was crashing in the preview vids.  300km's of real stages gone to complete waste, guess will just have to wait and hope modders fix the controls/physics/ffb so it's at least playable..

I can't say I'm surprised by how bad it is considering their past, but deep down I wanted it to be good.  Been closely following it for months and even though I tried not to get my hopes up I still feel let down.

The movement of the steering wheel in the drivers view is much more better than in DR, where the pilot moves it very little and max. 90 degrees.

That's a driver arm thing in DR, change your setting to remove arms but leave the wheel, it will then match.

There is a option in the service area setup screen to make the handbrake stronger. For whatever reason, it is VERY VERY weak by default. Also, the brake bias is waaaaay towards the rear and the brakes themselves are set to be very weak too. It's very...odd.

No ultra wide monitor support, so it looks awful stretched across my monitor. That and the frame rate is not very smooth, regardless of graphics settings. Also, I cant use my clubsport handbrake.

It runs and looks better on my ps4...

@BrySkye might have an interest in SLRE by the looks of it!
It took me a few moments to click on that.

At first, I thought it was a reference to @urgaffel ;s rocketing Fiesta and the wondrous Backspace Key.
Then I realised it's about me and flight sims.

Shame the game didn't make it's original 2015 release date.
Give it a De Lorean and it would have been perfect for the Back to the Future 2 celebrations.

Still, not a patch on my flying Great White Shark from Jaws Unleashed.

When you choose French language at the start you will hear Seb Loeb's voice during intro. That's the only positive so far. Oh, and the service area with mechanics in action ;)

Well they have 8 days to fix all the issues. Buy up all the coffeebeans and sell them to Milestone. Profit!
All their rally games for the past 6 years have had horrible/non-existent controller support, zero triple screen support, and horrific sound design.   Also, they are notorious for never patching game breaking bugs and compatibility issues.

Milestone obviously does not learn from their mistakes or critiques of just about every person who ever played their prior games.  The fact so many people worked on this and Loeb supposedly helped with handling is just a travesty.  They will never get my money again.

If you look past awful optimization and massive framedrops, a co-driver who are boring and doesn't give tonnes of information, bad FFB (I don't get how people feel this is better than DR), and the issues with the "playing area".
The basic driving is surprisingly OK. At least it feels more Monte Carlo when driving than in DR to be honest.

Nice intro...

I played about with settings, got the wheel feeling as good as its likely to get, got to grips with Monte fairly well and conclude that the game is a complete shambles.  That's a disgrace to Loeb's name to be brutally honest.

As a general observation, demos are something to generally be a bit weary of, since they are a slice of the game that generally has to be prepared well in advance, so they typically are lacking in a number of optimisations and bug fixes to the final product.

That doesn't always matter of course. The final release of Sonic 2006 was every bit as broken as it's demo.

Mind you, the game does have one thing from a technical viewpoint which DiRT Rally severely lacks.

See that?
They let me turn it off.

Tried setting Shader Detail to low in DiRT Rally? I've been told that it removes DoF and Motion Blur.

Hmm, just gave it a whirl. It is VERY jerky if you max everything, with lag (even in the menus to select keys!), however, set the game to something like 1920x1080, 60hz, lock V-Sync to 60 or 30 and turn your graphics card drivers to defaults and... it's a little better.

I just had a quick go (admittedly only on keys) on Monte Carlo on Loeb, Dirt Rally, WRC5 and WRC4. Loeb looks really nice, some lovely effects, but it is a bit arcadey feeling... up to a point. I caught some ice when braking and the car swung the wrong way from the corner, felt properly "grown up" handling... for a moment. I also managed to beach my car on a snow bank, then once again wished I knew how to exit back to the menu, rather than alt+F4 out of the whole game!

Dirt Rally obviously we all know and love, felt great even on keys, a step above, etc.

WRC5 I have no idea what was happening. Lovely stages (though graphically worse than Loeb and Dirt Rally) but the handling is just wrong, so slow to react!

WRC4 I expected to be quite like Loeb, as it shares similar .ini file (which you have to manually edit then set to read-only to lock in higher than 1920x1200 lol)... but it looks way worse than Loeb (imagine PS2 vs PS4), but seemed to handle a little better, even if much more arcade.

Overall, if Loeb wasn't so damn jerky (I'll play with the graphics quality another night) then it might be fairly respectable, if not in the same arena as Dirt Rally. WRC5 is arcade and not as much fun as the graphics look like, Loeb looks lovely but doesn't live up to the simulation billing, whilst Dirt Rally is the proper deal really, Dirt Rally is out getting grubby in forests, whilst the other games are mere gamey virtual reality sessions! Or something like that...

...yes, we know about that. It also affects a whole lot of other things as well.
Turning the whole shader detail down to low to get rid of just one very specific effect tied to it is not a solution, or even a compromise.
