Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 1

Recommended Posts

I figured there has to be a few anime and manga fans here. Personally, I cannot wait to go to Anime North (Toronto, ON) this year. Getting a hotel for the weekend and I plan to fill my suitcase with manga and other merch. before coming home.

Currently watching: Attack on Titan
Currently (re-)reading: Natsume Book of Friends

Dragonball z enough said ;)
I never could get into DBZ. For whatever reason it just never caught my interest. One of these days I should probably give it a fair chance and try to watch the first few episodes.

For now, I think I'm finally going to check out Space Dandy. From the creators of Cowboy Bebop. I'm also looking forward to Knights of Sidonia.

Reading/watching One Piece now. I'm mainstream like that. Also, I'm reading Bleach, even though I don't enjoy it, mainly because I need to see the ending after years and years of investment. Kind of like the last season of Dexter. But I love One Piece.

Recently watched Kill la Kill, which I can highly recommend to anybody who doesn't mind being hit over the head by a show that's absolutely insane from the word go. At the moment I have Nagi no Asukara on the go, which is a more serious slice-of-life story about children who live in the sea going to a high school on the surface. I know that doesn't sound like a very serious premise but... it's anime. They can make it work with anything.

So I watch a huge amount of anime, but don't really read any manga. Part of it is I don't seem to be able to put aside much reading time for anything, and I also just prefer seeing this stuff animated and bookended by catchy theme songs.

Just watched B Gata H Kei Yamada's First Time (all 12 episodes) today. VERY funny anime. Great dubbing too. Definitely high up on my list. Now to find the next anime to watch...

That's on my backlog! I should get on it, I'm in desperate need of a good comedy now since I just watched
Kanon (the 2006 version). And man if that doesn't get the ol' tear ducts working...

Glad to see I wasn't the only one having a bit of an Easter marathon :)

I'm going to throw FMA: Brotherhood out there as a recommendation. I think pretty much everyone has seen it at this point, but it's one of the all time greats so bears mentioning just in case.

I watched the original so I'm going to eventually get around to Brotherhood. B Gata was on Netflix US by the way. Not sure about UK. Going to give Welcome to the NHK a try now :) EDIT: I'm a huge FMA fan, just so many new things to watch since brotherhood came out. I even got Vic Mignogna's (Eng voice of Edward) autograph a few years back :D

Nice re the autograph, although I am strictly a subs only anime watcher so I don't really know what English Ed sounds like. Personally rate Brotherhood quite a bit higher than the original (although I do enjoy both), so yeah, definitely check it out!

I between subs and dubs. With work and such, many times I just want to come home and watch TV, so reading subtitles isn't ideal. Thankfully dubbing has improved considerably over the years. Welcome to NHK didn't catch my interest with the first episode. I'll have to revisit that later. There's simply too many anime's I want to check out right now :P And with Anime North next month, that list is going to grow considerably.

To make matters worse, we have a subscription to Crunchyroll, I just with the app worked better on the PS3/PS4.

Never got the appeal of Anime, seems like a glorified cartoon. But each to their own I suppose.

Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad > Every other TV show
Common misconception is that anime === cartoons. But they do not :) Anime is generally IMHO, more mature. Whether it is mature subject matter like death, relationships, drugs/alcohol, etc, anime touches upon topics that "cartoons" generally don't go near.

Anime is also known to be very eccentric, very wild in the imagination, and yes, very sexual at times. But there are different categories which you can look up later ;)

Suffice to say, anime =/= cartoons.

Anime North looks fun. The closest I've seen over here in the UK is MCM, which I've been to once or twice but never got along with all that well. But then again MCM didn't have a "K-Pop Kigurumi Dance Party", so that's probably the missing ingredient! :)

Understand what you're saying re dubs. I generally just find the timing doesn't feel right on the lines as they're obviously trying to make the animation match up as neatly as possible so the delivery doesn't sound quite like how an English speaker would say it naturally. Also I find it kinda weird if they're doing something very culturally Japanese with an English translation. For example before eating a meal, some dubs will replace the 'Itadakimasu!' with 'All right, let's eat!' or something. Which is just... no.

If Welcome to the NHK didn't work out then, what's next?

Describing the premise of
Kill la Kill to my non-anime watching friend was one of the most hilarious conversations of recent times.

I completely get what you are saying about subs vs dubs. Many times the dubbing is terribly timed and it really ruins the flow. And as you said, there are cultural things Japanese people do that simply don't translate to English, or not well at least.

As for what's next, Kill la Kill is actually on my list. I saw a few episodes and **** got crazy FAST! And that fan service...lol, I would have loved to of heard your description :D

Right now I'm between the following;
  • Wizard Barristers
  • Monogatari
  • Kyousougiga
That's just the shortlist.

Random suggestion to anyone reading - Time of Eve. I watched this on Crunchyroll last year and thought it was pretty damn awesome :)

I generally dislike anime, but there's some that have caught my eye, like Death Note. Only watched the first episode of Death Note though, I'll need to give it a proper watch sometime. And if I can be bothered to dig deep I'll probably find something completely insane that I'll love to bits.

Anime just isn't my thing, but I can enjoy it sometimes.

Not hentai though. That stuff's just weird.

Anyone here read PSYREN? It's fab!
I just went through my manga collection and *thought* I had that, but apparently not :( I'll have to check it out sometime. Here's my collection so far, a lot of volume 1's. And we actually just *gasp* purged a lot from our collection before moving last year.

Right now, I'm watching Haganai. Very fun so far, a good story, and plenty of fan service ;)

Gotta start somewhere :) You should check out D.Gray Man, see if that's something you would like.

Neat posts guys.

The heck no one has mentioned Initial D here? lol it seemed some of Grid was greatly influenced by that.
(Cough cough; Mt Haruna, the '86 etc)

I would of thought autosport would be the same as the final season as both are going to be released during the same timeframe.
But codemasters would rather add super utes instead of something that would obviously attract further sales lol.

But anyways if you guys like drifting and trains, check out
Densha de D
Drifting with trains! LOL xD
