Dirt Rally Desktops ....

What do you guys think about this one? Personally I love it and I made some important progress today in learning how to do HDRI renders correctly. Sorry about the background being quite low-res, free stuff y'know... :joy:

If you want I'm sure I could scrounge up some high res HDRI's for you. Another thing you might want to try is having HDRI environment lighting, but rendering the car on a secondary background. Not sure how you have it set up now, but something just looks... off.

Is it just me, or the car looks a bit too small (it's like 80% of actual size, mabe even less)? Also, as Madmax said, the light needs to be warmer, it just looks out of place right now. If it was a humanoid robot, it would be in the uncanny valley

Thank you guys for your feedback. After making the changes you suggested, the render really came out a lot better. The car is now 20% bigger and the lighting is a lot warmer.

I think the size could be even bigger. There arent really many reference points but those grass shrubs still look kinda big compared to the car.
About the lighting, I think the sweetspot could be somewhere inbetween them, it needed to be warmer, but maybe not that much :D And the light is a bit overexposed on the rood and left headlight. Also, in the first one, you had matched the shadows to the ones the grass is casting, but in this one, it looks like the shadow ir right under the car. My 2 cents :D

Ok, sorry in the delay replying, much better colour, but as suggested, it went a little *too* warm, much much closer in the GrpB pic above!

Size, again, yes, larger, the little yellow stand pipes in real life will come just below your knee (for scale)  And the shadows above look great :)

Thank you for your feedback! The warmer lighting is achieved by changing the skylight to mental ray's skylight and I'm using a haze-driven model in it. In that Group B render the haze multiplier is set to 5,0 and in the Focus above it was set to 10,0 when you guys thought that it was too much. And I really agree, 5,0 seems to be the correct value for that scene!

Do you think the cars should still be bigger or are they correct size now?

Yes, bigger, they look maybe 85%ish right now, again, those yellow stand pipes, imagine you're stood there, i believe they come up to just below your knee.

If that's an HDRI, is there any chance you can lower the exposure on it? It's a tad blown out and the white cars seem to lose some detail.

Can you somehow change the light temperature without adding more light? The Escort and the first Focus has about the right amount of light, just that it's too cool. The second Focus is overblown a lot and the Group B cars are overblown a bit. Also, if you look at the shadows, it looks like the sun is low, so there wouldn't be that much light

@JepserttiI don't know if you've heard of this guy, he mainly sticks to Blender, but he does quite a few really high res full 24 ev HDRI's, and samples quite a few out for free. Always worth having a good HDRI collection.

Thanks for the link! I actually tried one of those HDRIs last week but now when I think of it, there are a few more I'll have to give a try :)

Yeah, they're pretty good. The other ones I use are from Blender Guru in a paid addon pack... I could give you those too, they're just sky with the horizon and buildings removed.

I like it, but there's something off with the lighting. I think the light should shine a bit more on the front of the car, so the bumper is more visible and a bit less light on the hood so the red bull logo wouldn't be so washed out. I do like the dark background and the front view composition, it's just that the car is a bit too dark overall. And also the camera could be a bit lower and a bit further back, it's a bit "in your face" when set as a wallpaper (btw, I am using it as a wallpaper right now :) only a bit edited)

Tried to make it a bit lighter and more saturated. Also, just had a thought - shouldn't the Red Bull logo be more visible with more light instead of whiteout?

What are you using to light that? It looks really soft. I think that might look pretty good with a harsher plain rectangle light, this looks like it's running through a diffuser.

My idea was to create a render which only highlights a few parts of the car and make the LED lights stand out a bit from the rest. I decided to go with a soft lighting, which is achieved by making a plane above the car with a white (but not pure white) texture, and then I have a pretty strong spotlight targeted at it, which then illuminates the scene and gives the car the reflections. Maybe it wasn't that great idea then... :(

I'll try something else later this week.

So the light is diffused off a plane? Hmm.. Interesting, never tried that... Try just making the plane a light source and see how it turns out. I always spend a few hours fiddling with lighting scenarios before I get something I like. Try unconventional things, even things you think you might not like.

One way to get interesting reflections is to use white planes off camera. Real life product photography does that a lot.
