Dirt Rally Desktops ....

So, being a Finn, it was logical that I would do a render of @edgenz's Juha Salo Evo X skin first...

@edgenz If you're going to use the render somewhere, please credit me and link my Twitter https://twitter.com/JJBruce_ :)

I can't remember who did the Focus and some of the earlier ones now, but when they come up in my wallpaper cycle, they look sharper than the Manta, but i can't put my finger on why.

Well, I added two new lights into the scene (and did some other tweaks too) and tried to get rid of the grain with ridiculously high quality settings. After 15 hours of rendering, here we are:

Even after 15 hours of rendering I still didn't manage to get rid of the grain completely, so I would like to know what you guys think of the "new" scene otherwise!

Hmm, i actually like the result of the extra time :)  Sorry it takes so long on your system, but i certainly think it's worth the quality increase.

Trying to decide about the light changes, whilst the older render had some nice shadows on the car, the window reflections weren't great.  We lose those reflections with the new lighting, but also some of the darker areas of the car towards the front.  I don't know if that is a bad thing though :)

With such a high quality render you start to see the imperfections of the livery itself, the edges of the Teknos logo look a bit fuzzy

I like the white background better, it looks like one of those magazine photoshoots where they put the car in a giant room with a white curtain draped behind it.

So, a new DiRT with new lighting... Well, of course I had to make a completely new lighting system for my rendering scene too! And it resulted in something fantastic in my opinion:

I love how the reflections etc. look like now. Sadly I had a bit too high value on the front lights' bump map texture so the lights look a bit wrong but I really didn't have nerves to render the image again :joy:

this looks pretty good, i think i will have to ask you to make preview renders for my liveries

That is *very* good, soooo close, just a *tad* too bright.

Any chance of a "fixed" render?
I'd say photoshop the levels. And for the future, make the backdrop a bit more grey for future renders to differentiate the backdrop from the car. Otherwise it blends a tad too much.
Lighting itself looks quite good though.

So first of all sorry this isn't a rally car... But I've been trying new things in terms of lighting and materials and here's how things currently look like:

I'll have to render some rally car tomorrow!

Can't believe it's already been 1.5 years since my last render here! Well, that's about to change now because I decided to work on a new studio lighting scene. I think it looks very natural and hope you guys like it as much as I do. Also, thanks to @YorAlcoholicDad for his fantastic skin.

How do you make these renders? I'd love to get a batch of the good 2001 class like this https://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/l/38749-wrc-ii-extreme-playstation-2-front-cover.jpg but replace the Evo VII with the VI.

I'm experienced in Blender, so perhaps I could do some of these. Just don't know where you're getting the models and liveries from.
Each car on this position would be best: http://i.imgur.com/JiR82ZK.jpg
With their main liveries: Mitsu - Marlboro, Ford - Martini, etc. I'd be fine for only the 3 cars present in DR (Mitsubishi VI, Focus 2001 and Impreza 2001). 206 would be a bonus but Im not sure you can get the model the same way you got the others, specially if you're using game files.

Aaaaaand, if you can make it with a transparent background I would kiss your arse  :D just have to tick that option on the render settings.

I'm using models from DiRT Rally and DiRT 4 :) Completely transparent background isn't possible except for about 50% of the screen's height since the car is sitting on a white-colored plane for the shadows under the car.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I have no idea how to get similar results in Blender because I'm using 3ds Max with Mental Ray for my renders.

Oh alright, and how are you exporting the models with their liveries? I could try to import them into Blender. I know D4 uses NEFs but that's not a compatible format. I don't mind the shadow disappearing as that can be redone in Photoshop.

The reason is that I was thinking about making some sort of montage with those cars, put their drivers behind or something like that to make some sort of a banner and an unique background for each car. The problem is that I never had the 3D models to get the correct angles I wanted.

EDIT: Looks like I need something like 3DSimED to export the models into an acceptable format for Blender to open. I'll give it a look once I'm home.

@Jepsertti, can you give what definitions you use?

Your renderings are just mental. Would like to see a tutorial of you doing a render scene like that so I can learn as well.

This is kind of like the best I can do

Here's the last render of Fiesta R5 for now - I'll render some new model next and would like to hear what you guys want to see (both model and livery suggestions are welcome)!

I would really like to help you out but I've been fine-tuning my scene since August 2016 so there are many little things contributing to everything so it would take me ages to figure out what I've actually adjusted and writing it all down is even bigger of a job. The best advice I can give you is to put lots of time into tweaking the car materials and your scene's lighting. I use mr Sky Portals as my light sources because they give the best reflections and smoothest shadows in my opinion. :)

Here's my suggestions since I can't do them myself atm:

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI - Marlboro livery 1999 or 2000 (racedepartment has it)
Ford Focus 2001 - 2001 Martini Racing livery (McRae or Sainz)
Subaru Impreza 2001 - default in-game livery works. Bonus if you can get the Richard Burns name in it
