KevM's drunken ramblings aside, I decided to do the stages Ryu set us up with. The driving wasn't too bad, but my left heel is now on fire because of all that clutching. I deserve a (foot)rest. hurr

@Porkhammer
@Snaky115
@Cortextual
I came in on rank 4 and you three guys are above me. Considering that I drove the Metro with Zero upgrades whatsoever I have a burning question to you three: Have you had any upgrades on the cars you were using in the current event???

If the answer is yes from all of you I can happily claim myself the fastest unupgraded car of this event (thus far thow)  :)

Maybe ... :smirk:

I am only aprox 2 minutes behind Porkhammer, achievement unlocked - No Lifer.
Ah well.

Well, I'm at least happy most here enjoys how I set up the stages. Would be nice if the site would work as well though -_-

You still not having any luck either, Ryu? Just had one guy on my forum saying it's working him, but all I get is a blank white page. Firefox, Chrome, different PC's, even on my tablet, the same damn thing.

The U.K. Site is ok, I would imagine it could be Monday before it's resolved

Surely you can still compete?

Doesn't work for me.

I can't compete because I'm not yet invited. Asked a little too late and now I have to wait (rhyme!).

Well, no biggie...

He has to get accepted first, after he sends his request on the league page.
My page has worked fine the entire week, so not sure what is going on. Clean browser cache randomly, maybe? >_>

Cleaning cache does nothing. I even tried opening the site from IE, with no luck. Still just giving me a blank page. I've asked Mr. Hat about it though.

Maybe he could look at a bug Ive noticed too, in some of my replays, the car is kicking up tremendous plumes of dust on parts of the stage.  Knowing that the track is based on the mixed-surface Panzerplatte, I thought it was a clever, accurate and intentional feature implemented by the devs at first, but then lord Porky insists that the stage is clean grippy Tarmac and not covered in dust and sand.  That's a shame...  Porky says it's wrong, bad luck CM.
I suppose the layer of sand & dust could explain tyres rolling/gliding over a sealed surface rather than actually contacting & gripping it, kinda like the old treacherous pre-Pirelli rubber marbles off racing-line on an F1 circuit, or indeed the cushion of air that a hovercraft uses to glide on, that would make logical sense for the game behaviour.
But I suppose it's better stick by our guns & blame broken physics in an attempt to convince the rest of the forum we actually have the first clue what we're talking about when it comes to driving and in turn, give credibility to dubious extrordinary times that are posted regularly...

Are you being thick for real, Kev? I am going to say this slowly, so you will understand.

Grip - is - not - the - issue. The - grip - levels - are - fine.

It's the car gliding around like a hovercraft that is unrealistic and stupid. Note that I say g - l - i - d - i - n - g, like a hovercraft - and not sliding, which is what happens when a car loses grip.

I know that the Panzerplatte is dusty and slippery in places.

Now stop being thick. I grow tired of explaining stuff to a 6-year old.

You actually have the answer, you are too silly to realise it!!

Lets go back to basics...
Back when people were stupid, drawing on parchment & building pyramids, they had the sense to realise that big heavy objects + the ground = friction, but putting lots of something spherical or cylindrical underneath, significantly reduced friction.  Spherical shaped matter (like grains of sand/pebbles/marbles etc) would be effective, but directional control went out the window (shopping trolley/rally car - Germany/hovercraft etc), so even back then, they had the brains to understand this basic law of physics & they decided to use (log) cylinders to move things with control & direction (which would later evolve to become 'wheels').

History lesson over.  Go forward thousands of years.  Use a similar principle but replace logs with forced air to reduce friction & the hovercraft is born.  A vehicle that floats on reduced friction due to a cushion of air.  Then, combine the two ideas.  Move a heavy object over a sealed surface?  Put something between it and the surface it's moving over.  If the objects are spherical (sand, stones, pebbles) and the surface is solid, the heavy object will move in any random direction (of least resistance), sometimes uncontrollably, like a shopping trolley or hovercraft!  BINGO!!!  Tyres are no longer in 100% direct contact with road, objects (sand, pebbles) and momentum cause particle roll under the tyres, car turns into a large pendulum (hovercraft), both axles start gliding/floating semi-uncontrollably in the same direction (weight/momentum) and now we're playing with forces outside of simple grip loss & under/oversteer).

Nothing. Seems like Winter Wonderland decided to stop on the webpage first and make a huge blizzard while it's there xD

That would be the case... if the physics were calculated dynamically and in real-time, not based on pre-calculated values that describe how the cars behave. To further visualise what I mean, I'll show you one of very few places where physics are actually calculated in real time (notice what type of software that is).

Except that rally cars don't move like hovercraft. This becomes apparent should you ever decide to watch tarmac rallies.

So everything you just said is irrelevant.

Understand that cars aren't hovercraft, or kindly get lost.

(this was directed at KevM by the way - Ryu was unlucky to post a minute earlier than me)

:D there's that Tarmac word again.

Applying the the laws of Tarmac to the Panzerplatte is like applying the laws of aerodynamics to a submarine lol

I keep giving you the benefit of doubt Porky, but you keep surpassing yourself!  :D

Hint: you can do that in a game. You can make a car that looks like a submarine handle and feel and grip like an LMP1 car while still being able to do rally. Why? Because currently the physics are not real time.
Ever wondered why there's often the "Physics" meme going on in games when something wonky happens? That's because the physics are not the actual physics as you know and learned in the school, they are literally made by the Devs with the intent to represent something. In case of DiRT Rally, it's behaviour of a rally car on different stages. So naturally, if they would want they could make a car feel like a hovercraft and still grip like a go-kart.

Your whole argument contradicts itself Ryu so I don't know if you are for or against what I say.

But yeah, the devs could make cars look like pieces of fruit & make Germany feel like the gravel of Wales or the Tarmac of Corsica etc, but then it's a misrepresentation.  They have based it on the Panzerplatte & made sections with differing surfaces with differing characteristics, because that's how it actually is!!

They have emulated the stage within the constraints of their engine & we need to appreciate & respect their aim, rather than rubbishing it as broken, purely because we have no understanding of what driving actually is.  Paul understands it having sat in a rally car, & his brief & the teams execution to me are spot on! I have also co-driven rally's and worked for 2 years as an instructor at a small rally school/driving experience centre in Craigavon.
In Germany, we have nice grippy tar & concrete, & dirty sections where throttle balance & weight transfer become more important and hey, that pretty much nails rally driving (for anyone that knows what that is).
