DiRT Rally has coil whine issue on R9 290

Recommended Posts

I just noticed that my card has a slight coil whine problem, that is connected to my FPS limit. I have the game settings force 60 FPS through Vsync but I still get a very low frequency coil whine when the game get in the main menu, I mean you need to stick your ear in the PC case in order to hear it. The solution was to use a third-party program called RadeonPro that enforced 60 FPS along with double Vsync and the coil whine stopped.

My Specs are:

XFX DD edition r9 290
Asus H97-C
16GB DDR3 1866Mhz Kingston Furry
Thermaltake 730Watts PSU 80Plus Gold
i5-4570 3.20Ghz
1x SSD Kingston Now 240GB (OS installation)
2x WD Black 1TB (Games)

This is an issue with the card itself unfortunately, software is not responsible for this. Some cards have it, some don't. AMD cards tends to have it more often as they use lower grade components.

Same here on my Gigabyte 980ti, which is a common thing for this card apparently. Not just in DR, other games do it too.

I have fixed the issue with headphones haha
