Possibility to broadcast online races (TV-cam)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Since this week I'm loving Dirt Rally, but I'm also a member of a simracing group (SRVN.nl) and we host live broadcasts of our league races. In rFactor 2 you can join a server as a spectator and you can 'broadcast' the races with commentary and so on. Is there a possibility that this will be possible with Dirt as well? (mainly for WRX) Oh, and will the TV-cam be 'fixed' instead of randomly switching to (unrealistic) viewpoints?

Thanks in advance!

Example of what I mean of such a broadcast:

It would be lovely to at least have one extra slot available for the host (or someone assigned) to be spectator, but I don't know if it's realistic for the team to add this before 1.0 or soon after. Hopefully CM decides to continue DiRT Rally support not only with content but with these kind of additions.

Maybe good idea to take a look at the suggestion box right here: http://forums.codemasters.com/categories/suggestion-box

Thanks Areyouben, I saw already that suggestion box, but I found it strange that you always have to put a poll in it, while this is just a 'simple' question :)

This is one of those things that really needs to be factored into the games network code from the very beginning.
Absolutely no chance of it happening in DiRT Rally.
It's probably something you're going to see less and less of in games in general, instead favouring built in support for services like Twitch.

In SimRacing it's a recent development that the races will be broadcasted as such, so I don't understand why DiRT is not following that... :(

I think a Helicopter cam that follows the car through the whole stage could do the trick, but it may be a long shot for the developers...

The nice thing about DiRT Rally is that Codemasters now has a very good base too build upon. Of course there are aspects within the visual and physics departments that still can be improved somewhat, but overall they have created a game that does a lot of the important stuff right that have been wrong in their earlier games. What I'm saying is that from now forward, whether it's for this game or the next one, Codemasters might be able to give some more attentions to these kind of features a bit more since the base of the game is standing stronger then before this project.

It could be realistic for the team to have the majority of the team focus on the next thing (next game or DLC expansion with new locations or whatever) while a small part of the team looks into some extra features and additions and see if they can implement them in DiRT Rally. Some things are probably not possible due to how the game was build from the start. But if they want to make the next game even bigger they have to do the work anyways. So while they research the possibilities for DiRT Next they might as well look into what of that can be included to DiRT Rally post 1.0.

Yeah, and those that insist in altering Gravity, might inadvertantly make the chopper crash....  lol

LOL No more chopper view for them!! It'll be like Nicholas Cage's "Knowing" movie

This kind of falls into the "support for esports" category and all depends whether CM want to go that route and how far they want to dive in. It's more likely to happen on the RX side of things because they ran into technical limitations when exploring the possibility of multiplayer rally. They very well could add one spectator slot into the lobby and be done with it. If they want to go any further it gets more complicated and starts falling into the "serious support for esports" category. When someone requests to watch a race, they'd start streaming parts of the game server's data to a TV-relay server which can handle many connections. They'd also probably also want to implement a "Live races" tab in the multiplayer menu that shows what players are in what lobby and how many spectators there are. I doubt they'd do that before they also have multiplayer rally in a game as well though.
