Evolution of Rally (Community made video)

Recommended Posts

I'm making sure they're 60fps and 1080 for you.  In fact i'm now able to use the Matrox codec with Dxtory as i found out i can't use it unless i'm running 720p or 1080p (i have a 1200 screen)  Anyway, i can run in 1080p and record that.

@JZStudios Let me know when you can, which section you'd like the Manta running on and i'll get that run up for you ASAP.

It's still his dudeness on my avatar, JZ needs some glasses. :open_mouth:
Ha! Jokes on you! I already wear glasses! And it's a different dudeness, it's just not the same. And my glasses are only 4 or 5 years old.

Righty. Uhh, had a rough time at work, so if I don't start on the video tonight, I'll do it tomorrow on my day off. I'll get it set up tonight though.

On a seperate front, I feel like since you all dedicated time to the video you guys should also have a say in some of the video editing. Sort of thinking about trying to replicate the film style of the era, not sure if that's something you guys would like, but it would help with the evolution of rally feel.
I also am still unsure about music... Yea, Nay, suggestions?

This is a good idea.

Start off with the Beatles for the 60's, and so on and so forth. Huehuehuehue!

Hmm. Wasn't really thinking about changing songs with the Eras... but it could work, I'd need some good song suggestions for each era then.
I've suggested it before, but no one seemed to notice, but I was thinking of this

I like that, would certainly fit with some slow mo stuff :)
Ehh, I could slow the footage down to 30 and have premiere duplicate frames... But the song isn't that long.

What year is the Opel Manta in the game? Not sure if chronologically it should come before or after the 205.

Before.

It competed early to mid 80's.

I thought i saw midday cloudy as the weather choice a few pages back?  I think midday sunny is the brightest.

Thanksy.
Not sure why you suggested the song if it won't work for what you're doing...
You suggested slow mo, I did not.

There is no sunny, really, just one of them is brighter and the run Kev did looked duller, unless the weather is secretly somewhat dynamic.

And after roughly 5 minutes of youtubing I found these for source footage to try and replicate.

https://youtu.be/bR-kfn_q__Q
https://youtu.be/iUBG2me2zqA
They're all a little bit different enough to get their own filters/grain/noise/color, etc... What do you guys think? Getting into the 2000's I'll make it look a bit more high def with clear 1080 on the Polo and the R4 Suby. What about keeping the "era aspect ratio?" I could do it in a 480ish aspect, or keep it 1080, or lower in porks case. :|

Edit* also, what about audio? Should I try and match it with the source footage or leave it alone?

@KevM, you did your run in cloudy... Needed midday or whatever the brightest was.

I thought I ran it on the best conditions....  Damn!

I don't know now. Everything seems screwy. Might be able to get away with it.

Here's a quick test. I forgot to mess with the audio to go for the era mic recording quality, but the video is there. The 205 should be replaced with the Manta, and unfortunately my idea of a slick transition between the trees in the forest won't work, there's just enough camera movement variation that it ruins it... Which means I'll have to do a crazy opacity change edit, or just stick to harsh camera angle changes.

*edit, I also need to find more old film footage for the effects.
Hopefully I can get the video done in two weeks before the free trial expires... I'll work on video editing first, then go back and work on audio effects and volume leveling. Then work on an intro and outro, consider some music choices... I might have to cough up the $20 to get an extra month.

I see where it cuts *from* the 205, to what looks like the E30 again, then back to the 205.  Just how far are you planning on needing the Manta shot for?  It's already going to be slightly awkward as it's right at the end of the first half ;)

The transition scenes with trees in the way weren't that bad; it's only slightly noticable if one actually looks for it. At least from over here.

As far as transition go, I wouldn't necessarily  want to try to hide them. You could try 'flicker transition'. Basically it means editing short portions (few frames) of the next scene on top of the previous one, before the actual cut is made to the next one. Both cars would be in the center of the scene when the transition is made, so it would be sort of visible transformation. Also hides any 'cam shake' differences between scenes.

Look below video for how it's done. The technique is used here for a jitter effect, but it's works for the flicker too. Ignore the 'offset' and 'reversed' parts, you just need to overlay the short portions of  next scene at the end of previous.

Starts at 3:05

Premiere Element is for noobies & they added the old film "fx" in the Hollywood look preset so I can use it like ease.

So, the last half of the clip I just didn't cut, but yes the Manta would need to run the full stage since it's going to run through that section. Or at least it should... I should make a placeholder clip and make sure I've got 10 about equal transition points so all the cars get roughly the same screen time. Which is obviously a bit difficult since all cars run very different times. I wonder if I just add up the times, then average them out, then divide by 10 if that would give me an accurate timeframe for each car...

Hmm. I notice it, but Kevlars idea might help... I could try shaking the transition, an opacity overlay, or scaling up and moving it to find a better point of transition.

Hows my weather looking JZ, do you need a redo?  The M3 looks pretty like the rest of the runs?

@JZStudios So if you could let me know what stage setup you need, i can see where you cut *to* it, and if you can let me know where you intend to cut *away* from it, then i can make sure that i give you a fancier looking run for the section you'll use.
Let us know how that adding up of times and equally dividing them goes, sounds interesting, otherwise you're going to end up with very long sections in the Mini, progressively getting to very short for the 2010 car.

I like that transition idea, otherwise, i also think the straight camera change cut is fine too.
