Evolution of Rally (Community made video)

Recommended Posts

OK, few hours of uploading almost completed.
I've uploaded the files separately to account created specially for this occassion on Mediafire:
http://www.mediafire.com/?4bm92n5uvbj9b

First file is completed, second's 75%.
First file maybe in a little bit lower in game graphics quality.

If it stutters it's not game - it's video. At least it happened to me on Media Player Classic in Windows, SM player in Linux plays them fluently without any stuttering (just as the game was).

Let me know if my graphic's settings are all right and if I may proceed with further recording. I think I can make one car a day/two days.

P.S. I've recorded with everything at maximum in Shadowplay (also Bitrate).

Yes, that's what I did.  I can play Medium/High at @ 50/60fps.  Even recording a replay to lessen the CPU/GPU load, I have to scale down and record at 30-35fps or OBS gets choppy or worse, even with multiple online recommended settings.

the CPU is a Phenom X4 850, quite old but more than up to DiRT Rally
AMD, ok, then that should be fairly easy to optimise.

First, encoder settings:
- x264
- Use CBR set to Disabled
- Quality Balance set to "10"
- Use Custom Buffer Size enabled
- Custom Buffer size set to "0"

Broadcast settings:
- just make sure it saves to a local folder, aka one on your hard drive. Best if that hard drive is not the same that you're using for your Operating System. If you only have one, at least use a non OS partition.

Video options:
- 1920x1080 resolution
- no downscaling
- 30FPS

Advanced Options:
- enable Multithreaded Optimisations
- x264 CPU preset set to "Ultrafast"
- encoding profile set to "main"
- enable CFR
- enable custom x264 parameters and set it to "crf=15" (the number can range from 1 to 20, where the lower the number the higher the quality)

Here's where the settings come from: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/

With this you should've no issues when recording and your framerate should drop by at best 5FPS.

That's as I had them, but with CFR at 2.  I'll give that a go, though I'm 1440x900.  I can change that later for the purpose of this vid,
thanks for the tips :)

No wonder it was choppy. That's near lossless quality that requires powerful CPU, aka 8 cores at least (and we're talking about the Ivy bridge i7's and higher, not old AMD ones that compete with first i7's). Like I said, I knew there was an issue on the "user-software" side, so maybe next time we can go about it more... problem solving rather than "I set it right - No you didn't - Yes, I did you arrogant prick - Obviously not you ignorant monkey" way ;)

Still slight choppiness, but I have read that that the Windows Player might give that appearance regardless.  I'm recording live with minimal FPS drop now with 1440x900 and 60FPS on OBS but obviously there's no need for the massive files.  Tried downscaling to 720, but I dont see an advantage

Don't record at 60FPS. You can't do it, not with that old CPU. 30FPS at 1080p will be better (you can play at 50FPS while the file will be 30FPS, so don't worry, it's not like Craps where it locks the framerate). And download K-Lite Codec Pack, make sure to install Media Player Classic that comes with it. You can thank me (or not) later.

Alrighty then, I guess now that the arguing is over, I'll say that Porkhammer's Stratos run is already in 720, so sorry about that. If you really feel that strongly about it Ryu you could always buy him some new components.
Anyways, Thanks @dgeesi0 and @versedi for the vids, downloading now. Even though we invented the internet, we get half the speed for twice the cost :pensive: Go figure.
One more thing Ryu, I'm asking for help mostly because I'm not a superstar driver like Pork or Bear, and secondly because I don't have a 16:9 screen, which is the current standard. Yeah, 720 is a little low, but it's all Pork can put out, so I'll take it. not everyone has super rigs.

No arguing here, it's all good in da hood!  :)

I have the 6R4 sitting on the start-line ready to go, I'm just getting a cup o tea!  I'll upload to YouTube & if the driving of any use to you, I can upload the file elsewhere!

Ryu, OBS is not an option because I can't be bothered figuring out how it works. And no, I can't record in 1080p because my monitors' max resolution is 1440x900.

Ok, did my audition runs in the 6R4 and the Mk2 Escort this evening.  I have tried to be as animated and flamboyant as possible in the corners (because Mk2)
The Escort run is uploading as we speak on the URL below, so I'll leave it chugging away (past my bedtime)

https://youtu.be/h8lrMFtASN0

Have a watch.  If the quality and driving are ok, I will upload both tomorrow, but there's nearly 2 gig of footage so may need to look at that....

your videos fine porky.if edited well its will be sweet. :)
*cough* Slight admission to make on the editing front, uhh, well, 1. I'm no expert, and 2. I was using My dad's (essentially) coworkers Adobe cloud account for Premiere Pro, since I was supposed to edit their videos, (of which they never gave me) and he since canceled. So I need to do a quick test to see if I can still use it at all, and if not, then I'll have to use my other program which should be able to do the job just as well, just probably not quite as efficiently.

@JZStudios I'm not sure how I've missed that one, sorry for the lost transfer! I'll record new footage tommorow morning :) And since we're going for 720P I think I might be able to go full ultra on lower resolution.

I'd still prefer it in 1080 if you can. Porky and Kev can't manage much higher than that on their outdated palmpilots. :p

OK, so if you've already downloaded these anyway, let me know if anything's wrong with the quality / stuttering - should I change anything? What bitrate would you like?

Video looks good, smooth framerate and no stuttering (From the little bit I saw past the rain.)

Unfortunately my budget doesn't allow me to get a decent components even for myself (the GTX670 I have was bought used and only because my GTX460 was on its last legs). So as much as I would love to send a GTX970 along with a 1080p panel to everyone, it's definitely way beyond me :p

Actually, you can. DSR is a truly magnificent option to behold. Allows you to run the games at higher resolution than your monitor, which effectively increases the general quality. And I know, I did mention you're too lazy to be bothered about it :p
Then again, there are alternative to F(C)raps, like Bandicam at least. Would save you a lot of time if you have a good recording setup along with using Handbrake to further compress your video before uploading. From few GB's to few hundred MB's in case of 1080p, similar percentage decrease in size for other resolutions as well.

I might try the DSR later, good call!
I assume I should be able to turn the antialiasing down to lessen the GPU load to help when downscaling?
I found some weird stuff with my framerate last night.  Running D:R on low/medium, my FPS was previously 25/45 depending on stage condition.  I scrapped the mess that was GeForce Experience and got a slight increase.  For this thread last night, I cranked up the settings in-game and was getting 55/70 FPS on medium/high and able to play reliably @40FPS at Full High/Ultra setting, with medium shader detail.  Seems the heavier the load, the better the card performs (within reason).

Or use a program that frees some CPU bound resources, like Razer Cortex. There are ways of lifting the bottleneck if it's a CPU but none if the bottleneck is a GPU.

AA should be basically turned off when downsampling while playing, but since you'll be recording at in-game resolution... well, depends. You can try CMAA or 2xMSAA if it won't kill the framerate (which it shouldn't seeing as the CPU is the bottleneck in your case).

This time I've choosen right conditions and even beaten my PB over a second. Currently #13.

I've forgot to click Start upload in Media fire last evening. ll be finished in 15 minutes.

P.S. I know what the stuttering was - somehow after 1.0 DiRT has ignored my Inspector settings and chose to go without FPS limitation. Since I dont like anything other on my screen then game I wasn't exactly sure about that until I've switched on FPS-o meter. You should notice that the videos will be far better fluent now.

nVidia Inspector FTW :D
Also, it's not the game that ignored the settings. It's the graphics drivers that were updated/changed. With each update the settings there will reset. I advise to export all the driver profiles to an nVidia text file format, so you can quickly load all your settings without going through the hassle of changing everything one by one. It's the icon that has green arrow pointing upwards from what looks like a hard drive windows icon.

Since I use global settings (forced x16 anisotropic filtering for example) and quite few game specific settings, mainly forcing SGSSAA, it serves me quite well. FPS limitation chimes in often as well.
