Evolution of Rally (Community made video)

Recommended Posts

All jokes aside about my mental instabilities, I had an idea about doing an evolution of rally history in DiRT Rally. Basically I want to make a video of at least 1 car from every era or group going around Sweet Lamb, since as far as I can tell, it's a community favorite. I plan on doing some shwanky editing so all the runs act as one. I however have a few problems with this, well, 1 actually. I pretty well suck. So in absence of actual skill, and not wanting the time to garner it, nor do the stage roughly 100 times in a row, am reaching out to the community. To the masters of rally, in virtual form. To @Porkhammer, @Dgeesio, @RyuMakkuro, if he can manage to complete a stage and still have tires remaining, and anyone else who may be interested. The more the merrier, if we could get every car down the track that would be the absolute best. I'm also open to any ideas and suggestions, think of it as a community made thank you video to the DR crew and Rally in general.

If you're going to do this with other people recording, make sure you have the same recording settings pls. I can give some OBS settings that aren't to intensive but still look great.

You want replay cams?
Yes. Internal views could be used, but not required. I'm also thinking about maybe doing some slow mo around some corners to give the cars a little bit more screen time. not quite sure, hence the community ideas.

Edit*
Slow mo would I think only be required if we do get most/all cars around the stage, otherwise each car would only be up for a few seconds.

Agreed. A higher end medium at least. I'd also like to make it 60fps, but could do 30 if that's not possible. Another reason actually I want community involvement is I no longer have a 1080 monitor, and I'd like to do the video in 1080 format. (My current monitor is 1280x1024, planning on buying my own 1080 pretty soon.)

I'm in the same boat as PH, best I can run is Medium/High graphics.

id like to see the OBS settings @AphDburn as my sound is always distorted

I can max out the game but possibly without 4xMSAA, only 2xMSAA. I don't mind sending huge files though (about 20Mbps upload speed), it depends if you don't mind downloading 100GB+ in raw quality. I can also convert them in Handbrake to retain quality but drastically lower the file size.
Also, keep in mind I am using a gamepad, so my driving won't look as good as dgeesi0's will. I'm definitely not a master here ;) Well, maybe on Pikes Peak I slightly am, though my battle with @Rallycameraman will probably be made like a child's play when Porkhammer will get into a mood of doing a proper run there xD

@Porkhammer, What kind of graphics/fps do you get? If you can run medium at 60 that'd be great, otherwise again I could reduce framerate to 30. Same question to @KevM. I think there should be a graphical standard of some sort.

@RyuMakkuro, We could cut back on some other small details
and possibly bump up AA if need be, but I think 2x should be fine. I plan on uploading to YouTube so a 1080p60 at a bitrate of around 35 should be fine, in H.264, or whatever else format. I have Premiere Pro, so file type isn't a problem. That does bring up another question though, I'm not sure where or how to share video files. Any ideas?

@dgeesi0, At this point all classes and cars are open, so you could pick whatever you want. I'd like the livery to be "official" DR, but if you like another modded but reality based livery that'll work too.

Get back to me on what graphics settings you can run at and we'll come up with a standard. Sort of a shame more people don't have my 960 or higher. :p

I wonder if @thecraicbear would be interested in helping?

I can run a High/Ultra mix reasonably well, it might be slightly harder to drive, but I wouldn't need to be on the limit so should be ok

I'd be happy to help, currently I'm running the game around High settings with AA set for MSAA x4, shader detail in High, just the Trees lowered to medium as well as few other small settings. I'm playing on stable 60fps but in hard weather conditions (i.e. night + rain + interior cam) it's always getting down and it's no more stable. If you'd decide to create a 30 fps clip I'll be able to help you with some of the recording.

My times are not so good as Porks, and other Aliens but I'm closer with everyday ;)

If you'll be doing a slow motion stuff, uploading at 1440p30 will be a better decision. The quality will actually be higher than on 1080p60, since it's the bitrate that counts, and at 1440p you have double of what you get at 1080p60 and you'll be able to take both 60FPS and 30FPS footage, while using the 60FPS one as the slow-mo ones in editing. Just remember to tick in Adobe Premiere the "Use Maximum Render Quality" to give a better quality of the footage, since you'll be upscaling the 1080p footage after all.

As for sharing... tough call. Mediafire seems like a good option, but even they have limits and for some unknown to me reasons I upload very slowly to their servers, though I download like mad. I have just over 28GB on OneDrive though, so we may use it if everyone will use Handbrake and compress the files to not go over the limit.

i use max settings 120 fps @1080.

i dont use modded skins but will do whatever car you want sweet lamb whatever cam.

if you want ill do pug 205 t16 as i enjoy doing that on sweet lamb maybe subaru 2001 also.think you should get a list of whos doing what then we know what to do ;)

@RyuMakkuro, 1440 would be cool, but @Porkhammer's 570 won't handle that.  :p It would also make it so 1080 is upscaled or 1440 downscaled. I was thinking about slowing the 60fps footage down to 30 to slow mo, but I'm not sure it's required, and it would probably actually be easier to ask the drivers to just slow mo a corner or two, maybe a jump. Whatever they think looks good and I could edit it and use whatever I need to later. I know YouTube does some weird things with bit rate at different resolutions. If I upscale from 1080 to 1440 would that look better or the same/worse?

@versedi, I noticed that shading doesn't make much difference between medium and ultra, but I also don't think it affects the performance that much either. Also planning on doing the midday cloudy I think it was, the brightest option, no rain.

So this will be a car list post, just to make things clear. Quote the post with which era/group you want and which car, so there's no doubles.
So if @dgeesio wants to do the 2001 Impreza, maybe @RyuMakkuro should take the 07 Focus, and pretend like it's a different car class? That covers the 2000's I guess...

Screen capture & YouTube will kill any quality we are aiming for though

And one more post for a standard graphics setting. Can everyone at least run medium?
Shadows can be anything above low, there's not much change between medium to ultra.
Advanced Fog just adds the z-depth alpha filter pass which makes distance looks more white. Not much of a FPS damper, but everything looks clearer with it off.
There's not too terribly many particles on Wales due to mud and such, so particles could be turned down if it hampers your FPS at all.
The crowd doesn't change too much from low to ultra, but again, only bothers my gpu very little.
AO changes a little from medium to ultra so medium should be fine.
Advanced AO drops my FPS by about 10, so if you can't run it, don't worry about it.
Mirrors realistically shouldn't matter all that much, considering that at high, from replay cam, they don't really work anyways.
Ground cover I would like to be at least at low, there's not any visible difference to me between low and ultra, other than an additional 10 fps.
Vehicle Details and Track doesn't seem to change much for me, so not sure what that affects.
Objects includes little track surface rocks starting at high, so that'd be preferable if possible.
Everything else can be set to medium or above.
Advanced Blending on. Just kidding. >:) It actually causes graphical problems.

What other medium do you suggest? I use Shadowplay, which actually record in really high quality to my spare media drive.

He'll be recording at 1080p, you'll be exporting the footage as 1440p after you're done editing it. Don't worry about the upscaling loss of quality, since you'll gain much more quality from the increased bitrate that YouTube provides. Like I said, it's about 5Mbps for 1080p60 vs 10Mbps for 1440p30. That's twice the bitrate while you're increasing the resolution by 1.78 and reducing the amount of FPS by half. You don't have to be a math genius to calculate which will look better ;)

The '07 Focus is actually at least '08 model. Just saying.

Another thing, if we'll be deciding which parts are slow mo... then why is there even any point in hoping for 60FPS video? You use 60FPS for pure gameplay, 30FPS for montages, since with 30FPS, you can benefit from a smooth slowed footage if that footage is in 60FPS. If you try slowing down 30FPS footage, it will get stuttery, while if we'll be deciding which parts are slow motion, then the one that will be editing the video will be forced to use slow motion clips as slow motion. Rather stupid approach to this IMO.

If you want to benefit from the slow motion feature of the replays, then you need to record everything by yourself I'm afraid. Otherwise there's just too many factors that limit what you can do.

Unfortunately I won't be able to properly commit right now. I'm travelling back and forth to London most weekends, and have a lot of work on the go, so I'd only be able to do it whenever it is I find time to cook something up.

@RyuMakkuro I googled this up
Type Video Bitrate, Standard Frame Rate
(24, 25, 30)
Video Bitrate, High Frame Rate
(48, 50, 60)
2160p (4k) 35-45 Mbps 53-68 Mbps
1440p (2k) 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
480p 2.5 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p 1 Mbps 1.5 Mbps
So alright, fair enough, I can upscale. There's more fine control over slow mo in the replay on the drivers end. 60fps is just a nice to have for smoother video, but again, I can go without, especially in the case of @Porkhammer. His driving I feel should definitely be in place. also again, I'll only need/use slow mo if there's more than 10 cars recorded just to drag it out a bit. Judging by the fairly limited response though, I don't think it'll be a problem.

@thecraicbear, Bummer. It's no rush, and not imperative anyways. Maybe I should start it after the holidays so schedules are clearer. My family has a lot of December birthdays to contend with.

@KevM Anything you can provide will be good. If you can't hit 60 then just go for 30 and I can figure it out later.
